Ladies and gentlemen, the 2023 NFL regular season is here! Week 1 has arrived, kicking off with Thursday Night Football between the Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs.

As is always the case, the opening Thursday night game is a blockbuster matchup. Detroit is a young, on-the-rise team that just barely missed out on the playoffs in 2022. Head coach Dan Campbell’s crew is favored to win the NFC North in 2023. Kansas City, of course, is the defending Super Bowl champion and has lifted the Lombardi Trophy twice in the last 4 years.

Here are my best touchdown scorer bets for the game. Additionally, make sure to also check out our full Lions vs Chiefs picks and all of our NFL Week 1 predictions.

Jahmyr Gibbs, RB, Detroit Lions (+165 at FanDuel)

Jahmyr Gibbs was the Lions’ first-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and he will want to make a statement right away. The team obviously wants that, too. With D’Andre Swift gone, Gibbs immediately becomes RB1 in Detroit. David Montgomery will also get some carries, but this backfield belongs to Gibbs, at least for the time being. This should be a good situation for the 21-year-old, as the Lions have enough weapons (Amon-Ra St. Brown, for example) to keep some of defenses’ attention away from Gibbs. How good is this guy? Well, he racked up 926 rushing yards and 444 receiving yards to go along with 10 total touchdowns in his final season at Alabama. I expect Gibbs to get off to a hot start at the expense of Kansas City defense that will likely be without DE Chris Jones.

Kadarius Toney, WR, Kansas City Chiefs (+210 at FanDuel)

Kadarius Toney isn’t exactly a newcomer with the Chiefs (they acquired him from the Giants midway through last season), but he will also be eager to get involved right away. The first-round pick in 2021 is listed as WR1 on Kansas City’s depth and – much unlike last year – he figures to be a massive piece of this offense. That could be the case to an even greater extent on Thursday, as star tight end Travis Kelce is questionable with a knee injury. If Kelce can’t go, Toney will be Patrick Mahomes’ primary target in the red zone – and perhaps even across the entire field. Even if Kelce does play, Toney still has a great chance to deliver a touchdown. The former Florida standout scored in 2 of the last 6 games of the 2022 regular season and he also found paydirt in the Super Bowl. I will happily back Toney to come out of the gates on fire in 2023 at relatively long +210 odds.
