Horse Racing picks for Churchill Downs race track on Saturday, July 2: Aloha West says goodbye to the field

Swiss Skydiver wins the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Racetrack.

There is great racing across America on Saturday, including at Churchill Downs race track. We have been on fire with our picks for a long time now and are up +313.63 units with our race selections to our recommended stakes dating back to August 5, 2021. Let’s keep it rolling!

Here are our best bets for today’s action at Churchill Downs.

1:16 pm Churchill Downs (Race 2) – Special Reserve 7/5 (2-star play)

Delivered a Grade 2 victory in the six furlong Phoenix Stakes at nearby Keeneland in October last year and followed that up with a good fourth place finish in the prestigious Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Del Mar in early November. Absent since then Tyler Gaffalione’s mount gets a significant drop in grade racing first up here and looks capable of making a winning seasonal debut having missed his intended reappearance here in May due to track conditions.

3:23 pm Churchill Downs (Race 5) – Wicked Halo 9/5 (2-star play)

Scored in Graded company at Saratoga as a two-year-old but somewhat surprisingly has only made one start in a Graded stakes since with that coming when finishing third in the Eight Belles over seven furlongs here in May. Impressed when delivering a two-and-three-quarter-length triumph in a stakes contest over the same track and trip subsequently. Steve Asmussen’s charge is bred to appreciate this extra distance and she can record a victory on her first start at a mile.

4:35 pm Churchill Downs (Race 7) – Super Quick 2/1 (2-star play)

Showed good form when finishing a close up third behind a top performer in Malathaat in the Grade 3 Doubledogdare Stakes over a mile-and-one-sixteenth at Keeneland in April with that effort marking her first in stakes company. Showed that was no fluke when drawing fourteen-and-a-quarter-lengths clear of her rivals when making all the running in the Grade 3 Distaff Stakes over a mile-and-one-eighth at Pimlico subsequently and she is taken to make a winning return to Kentucky.

5:16 pm Churchill Downs (Race 9) – Aloha West 2/1 (2-star play)

Had a productive year in 2021 placing in a Grade 2 contest prior to delivering a top level success when getting up to win by a nose over six furlongs in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Del Mar in November. Returned with a third in the seven furlong Grade 1 Churchill Downs Stakes here in May and he can put a below par fourth in the mile Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap behind him to take this contest.

5:47 pm Churchill Downs (Race 10) – Mandaloun 2/1 (2-star play)

Runner-up twice in Grade 1 company last year including in the Kentucky Derby at this venue 14 months ago the Into Mischief colt made a winning seasonal reappearance when taking the Grade 3 Louisiana Stakes over a mile-and-one-sixteenth at Fair Grounds in January. Below that form when down the field in the Grade 1 Saudi Cup over a mile-and-one-eighth in Riyadh subsequently he looks up to making a winning return from a break with regular jockey Florent Geroux up.
