There is plenty of great horse racing action to look forward to across America on Sunday, including at Del Mar race track. Here are three runners which we think look to be a class above the opposition in their respective races. Let’s dive in and take a look at some potentially lucrative plays.

5:00 pm Del Mar (Race 1) – Surplus 8/5

Demonstrated improved form when finishing runner-up, beaten half-a-length in a maiden special weight at Los Alamitos early last month. Tried to make all on that occasion having previously attempted similar tactics when finishing eighth over six furlongs on turf when debuting at Santa Anita the previous month. Drop in trip here looks likely to suit and he looks capable of employing similar tactics to provide jockey Trevor McCarthy with a fifth winner of the meeting.

5:30 pm Del Mar (Race 2) – Defunded 9/5

Has shown himself to be capable of competing at a higher level having placed second in Graded stakes company in his two most recent starts including when beaten a nose in the Grade 3 Los Alamitos Derby over a mile-and-one-eighth at Los Alamitos early last month. Tracked the pace that day and switched to an allowance optional claimer is taken to register a second career success having taken out a maiden special weight at Santa Anita in March.

8:30 pm Del Mar (Race 8) – Sally Stanford 8/5

The selection has placed on all three starts to date including twice in maiden special weight company, most recently when third at Los Alamitos on her penultimate start. The drop in grade to a maiden claimer saw the daughter of Stanford sent off a short priced favourite only to be beaten by a newcomer over five furlongs here last month. The extra half-furlong looks unlikely to inconvenience and she can break her maiden under promising apprentice Jessica Pyfer.
