I'm an NFL handicapper here at Pickswise who was raised in a household full of sports fanatics. Since I unfortunately never had LeBron James' jumping ability I wasn't able to make it to the NBA, and chose writing about sports as the next best thing. An avid sports bettor myself, I'm excited to get to write about the industry as it gets set to take off across the country. Buckle up. It’s so close we can taste it. March Madness 2022 is right around the corner, and here at Pickswise we’ve got a ton of content coming to get you primed. We’ll have an official March Madness hub coming soon, but for now keep an eye on our NCAAB page for all the latest.

Today we’re talking Selection Sunday. Before we can turn our attention to betting on the tournament, we need to find out who’s playing in it. Let’s dive into what we can expect from the selection show:

What Is Selection Sunday?

Selection Sunday might be the most exciting sporting event that isn’t an actual game. No basketball will be played, but there’s still plenty of suspense. It’s the annual broadcast where it’s announced which 68 teams will make the March Madness field. The brackets are also put out on Selection Sunday, so you can start filling yours out immediately after the show. We won’t just learn which teams are making it, we’ll also learn who is playing who in the first round.

How Are The March Madness Teams Selected?

Every team that wins their conference tournament secures an automatic bid, while the rest of the teams are jockeying for ‘at-large berths’. Most of the top at-large teams will know they’re safe entering Selection Sunday. The real suspense lies with the ‘bubble’ teams, who will all be hoping and praying they hear their names called. The NCAA has a 12-person men’s basketball committee which will determine which at-large teams make it.

What Are March Madness Seeds?

Not every team that makes the tournament is on equal footing. Seeding is very important for March Madness. Teams are grouped into 4 regions, and each region has 16 teams that are seeded 1-16. The top team in each region gets a 1-seed, while the lowest-ranked team in each region gets a 16-seed. The matchups for the first round go 1 vs 16, 2 vs 15, 3 vs 14 etc.

There are also ‘play-in teams’ that play in a mini tournament before the Round of 64, which explains why there are actually 68 teams that make it instead of 64.

When Is Selection Sunday 2022?

Selection Sunday is rapidly approaching, and it takes place on March 13 this year.

What Time Is Selection Sunday 2022?

The broadcast will start pretty much right after the last conference tournament games wrap up. Several conferences finish their tournaments on Sunday afternoon, and then Selection Sunday starts right after at 6:00 pm ET.

What Channel Is Selection Sunday On In 2022?

The 2022 edition of Selection Sunday will take place at 6:00 pm ET on CBS. Lots of teams will have cameras embedded with their squads watching the announcements, which adds to the fun of the broadcast.
