In 2023, the Red Sox have largely dominated this historic rivalry. Yankees-Red Sox games are never meaningless per se, but this series is a rare occasion where these teams meet without any playoffs implications as they both near elimination every day that goes by in September. Despite no realistic shot at making the playoffs, these teams will bring the jam based on the rivalry alone. The Red Sox will look to cap off a dominant head-to-head season while the Yankees look to punch back and end the season series on a higher note, especially after winning the first 2 games of this 4-game series.

New York Yankees -1.5 over Boston Red Sox (+145)

The Red Sox have controlled the season series but it appears to be the Yankees going out on a higher note. New York is 11-4 in their last 15 games entering Thursday. Boston is 4-11 in their last 15 games which includes losses in the first two games of this series. Ironically, since the Yankees unofficially called it a season, they have turned it on and played some great baseball.

Tuesday’s doubleheader sweep for the Yankees over the Red Sox gave New York their 5th straight road win. For Boston, it was their 8th loss in their last 9 games at home. On the run line, the Yankees have covered their last 4 consecutive games and are 38-32 ATS on the road this season. Albeit without playoff implications, things look much better for the Yankees to beat up on the Red Sox in this one in Game 1 of today’s doubleheader.

Over 9.5 (-105)

Contrary to head-to-head season results as well in terms of the total, the over has appeal in this game. The starting pitchers in Game 1 will be Michael King for the Yankees and Tanner Houck for the Red Sox. The over is 4-2 in their combined last 6 starts and they both represent a bit of a question mark. King has put up good numbers this season, but the majority of which was done as a reliever. Since today is a doubleheader, managers may want to save their bullpens which would mean the starters are stretched longer regardless of performance.

On the opposite side of the field, Houck has been a starter for each outing this season, but results have not been there. In 17 starts, he has a 4-9 record and 5.28 ERA. Reiterating the above, if the Yankees jump on him early, there may be hesitation to bring him out so as to not use up too much of the bullpen before tonight’s game. The starting pitching matchup and potential game script give this over enough appeal.

Gleyber Torres 2+ total bases (+115)

There have not been many bright spots in this Yankees lineup this season, but Gleyber Torres has definitely been one of them. On the season, Torres is hitting .271 with a .802 OPS along with 25 home runs and 65 RBIs. He will likely be slotted in the lineup somewhere between DJ LeMahieu, Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton. If the Yankees can muster up any level of production, there is a good chance that Torres is part of it.

In the 2 games this series, Torres is 3-8 with 3 RBIs. As mentioned, he will face a pitcher that has not been able to find it this season. The final month of the season has seen good production from Gleyber Torres and Thursday’s game is set up well for him to be able to pad some stats. The way the Yankees have been playing gives props for one of their best hitters even more appeal than it would have otherwise.
