MLB Picks Today: Expert Predictions & Best Bets for Saturday, May 23, including Mariners vs Royals

Since graduating from Davidson (The College That Stephen Curry Built), I have been writing about sports -- just about any and all you can think of! -- and coaching tennis in Atlanta, GA. Beyond the four major sports, I am an avid tennis fan and cover the ATP Tour on a daily basis. If I'm not busy writing, you can generally find me on a tennis court or traveling the world wherever a sporting event takes me. For Ricky Dimon media enquiries, please email contact@pickswise.com.

The week in Major League Baseball continues with a more than full 15-game slate on Saturday (St. Louis and Cincinnati are playing a double-header). Saturday’s schedule is headlined by a couple of regionally televised showdowns on FOX at 7:15 pm ET, with the Red Sox hosting the Cardinals and the Dodgers visiting the Brewers. Other matchups include Mariners vs Royals on FS1, Rays vs Yankees and Astros vs Cubs.

Here are my best bets, and also make sure to check out our MLB picks for predictions throughout the 2026 season.

Seattle Mariners ML over Kansas City Royals (-140)

The Royals’ disastrous form continued with a 2-0 loss in the series opener on Friday night. They are on a 4-game losing streak and have a 1-10 record in their last 11 contests, falling to 20-31 overall. Although the Mariners have by no means been great, they at least sport a nice 3-1 record in their last four outings. Especially good news for the visitors is that George Kirby is taking the mound on Saturday. Kirby is 5-3 with a 3.45 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and a 52-to-16 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 62.2 innings of work. Seattle is 5-2 in the right-hander’s last 7 starts, with losses during this stretch to 2 of the best teams in baseball (Atlanta and San Diego). Kirby has allowed 2 runs or fewer in 6 of his last 7 appearances.

Miami Marlins ML over New York Mets (-108)

Although the Mets are a respectable 11-7 since their ridiculous 12-game losing streak in April, they are still a disappointing 22-29 overall and have now lost 3 of their last 4 contests. Things may not improve any on Saturday with Miami’s Max Meyer toeing the rubber. Meyer is 4-0 with a 2.85 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and a 60-to-19 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 53.2 innings. New York does not have much familiarity with the right-hander, and that usually favors the pitcher in those matchups. The Mets’ current lineup is a combined 2-for-13 lifetime against Meyer. Miami is 16-15 at home after prevailing 2-1 on Friday compared to a dreadful 7-14 on the road. It’s not like the crowd – or lack thereof – makes any difference, but the Fish simply play better in their own park. They should be able to once again take care of the Mets.

Texas Rangers vs Los Angeles Angels Under 8 (-105)

This is an intriguing pitching matchup between Nathan Eovaldi of the Rangers and Walbert Urena of the Angels. Eovaldi comes in with a 3.62 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and a sparkling 55-to-12 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 54.2 innings. The righty has been especially on fire of late, allowing just 1 run in his last 3 appearances across 22.0 innings. Urena is sporting a 2.70 ERA, including a 1.64 mark through 4 outings this month. Texas is third-to-last in the American League in runs scored for the year (198) and L.A. is not much better at 210. These 2 teams combined for a surprising 15 runs in the series opener on Friday, but hopefully they got all of that hitting out of the way. Look for Eovaldi and Urena to restore order to the proceedings.
