I've been a capper since my love for sports met my proficiency with numbers and math. The NFL and NCAAF have always been my first loves, followed by the NHL. Although I prefer sports that involve hitting people, I still love capping MLB, soccer, tennis, and even some esports. Living in Florida has its perks like year-round sports of any kind. We’re back with yet another full slate of MLB games. We’ve got some classic rivalries and plenty of teams battling for the postseason. All it takes is predicting if a run will be scored in the 1st inning or not. There are a lot of games to analyze, but we’ve broken down the best spots to target and boost your bankroll. Along with these early plays, be sure to check out our MLB picks for all of today’s games.

Let’s take a closer look at my 2 favorite YRFI/NRFI bets for today.

Philadelphia Phillies vs Miami Marlins: NRFI (-120)

There won’t be NL Cy Young-favorite Sandy Alcantara on the mound again for the Marlins, but there still shouldn’t be any early action in tonight’s game. Miami has rookie stud Edward Cabrera back on the mound. Despite his inexperience, it’s already clear he has a bright future ahead of him. After missing July, he didn’t allow a 1st-inning run in any of his first 4 starts last month. That streak only ended when he met the league-best Dodgers. However, he immediately started up a new one by keeping the next 2 best teams in the National League scoreless in the 1st inning. That would be the division-rival Mets and Braves.

In that first stretch of games was also a start against the Phillies. Not only did he keep Philadelphia scoreless in the 1st inning, but they also didn’t score in that entire game. On the mound opposite him was Phillies starter Kyle Gibson. He too prevented the Marlins from scoring in the 1st inning. That shouldn’t be surprising given Miami’s run production overall. They’ve scored the 4th-fewest runs in baseball, and have scored more than 4 runs just a handful of times since the all-star break. Better yet, they’re the overall lowest-scoring team in the 1st inning. With both starters already proving to shut down the opposition, another slow start should be in store on Wednesday.

New York Yankees vs Boston Red Sox: YRFI (-120)

We’re going to transition to arguably the best rivalry in any sport. Note that we’re also rooting for runs this time around.

Neither team will have their top pitchers on the mound again, which should set up for some early fireworks. Yankees lefty starter Nestor Cortes has had a solid year, but also recently missed some time on the injured list. After starting last season in the bullpen, this is by far the most innings he’s pitched in his career. Despite the Red Sox’s rocky season, they still have some of the league’s best hitters. They’re the 9th-best lineup in the league against lefties, led by Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers. Bogaerts is 2nd in the American League with his .318 batting average, and he and Devers are tied for the 4th-most doubles in the AL with 37.

Playing in Fenway Park certainly helps with those numbers. It ranks as the 2nd-best for extra-base hits and 3rd-best for overall runs. That also played a factor in Cortes’ only start against the Sox this season, which was also in Boston. The Sox scored 2 runs in that 1st inning. On top of that, the Yankees scored 4 runs in that 1st inning as well. Boston starter Brayan Bello wasn’t on the mound for that game, but he’s just a rookie. He has yet to face the Yankees in his career, and has struggled against the AL East. His first 3 career starts were against the Rays and Blue Jays. Bello allowed at least a run in the 1st inning of all 3 of those games. This may not be another 6-run 1st inning, but early action should still be expected.
