Texas Rangers -1.5 over LA Angels (+120)

Lucas Giolito has been an unmitigated disaster since joining the Angels. He is 1-2 with a 9.00 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP in 3 starts being acquired from the White Sox at the trade deadline. The right-hander has allowed a .283 batting average and 5 home runs in just 15.0 innings. Now he runs into a Texas lineup that has terrorized right-handed pitching in the last few weeks with a 126 wRC+ — the 4th-highest rank in baseball during this stretch.

The Rangers are going with a trade-deadline acquisition of their own in Jordan Montgomery, who has given up just 4 runs in 12.0 innings since the deal. Texas is up by 3.5 games in the American League West thanks to an awesome 10-2 record in its past 12 contests. This is a tale of 2 teams going in opposite directions.

Atlanta Braves -1.5 over New York Yankees (-102)

I actually can’t think of a worse combination for a team than Luis Severino on the mound facing the Braves’ offense. Alas, that will be the fate endured by the Yankees on Tuesday night in Atlanta. Through 63.2 innings this season, Severino is saddled with an 8.06 ERA. Since the all-star break, he has made 5 appearances (4 starts) with a 9.43 ERA and 2.05 WHIP. His most recent outing came in long relief  against the White Sox and he allowed 4 runs on 5 hits (1 homer) in 2.0 innings. That means in his last 9.1 innings on the mound, the right-hander has allowed 18 runs on 20 hits (4 homers). Just imagine how bad things could get when he has to go up against the best team in baseball! Atlanta completely destroyed New York in the series opener on Monday and I expect more of the same here.

Baltimore Orioles ML over San Diego Padres (+120)

Baltimore holds a 3-game lead in the AL East heading into today’s action and the Orioles should be able to maintain it or extend it. They are underdogs against San Diego, but I like their chances with Jack Flaherty toeing the rubber. Flaherty got off to a slow start this year (who didn’t for the Cardinals?), but he heated up in July to the tune of a 3.03 monthly ERA and has not slowed down since being acquired by Baltimore at the trade deadline. Through 2 starts with his new team, the righty has allowed just 4 runs in 11.0 innings while striking out 16 batters and walking 4. Although beating Michael Wacha won’t be easy, it really hasn’t mattered who has been on the mound for the Padres. San Diego has lost 8 of its last 10 contests and could be in for another defeat here.
