The New Orleans Saints had a golden chance to win the NFC South in 2022 but failed to capitalize on a vulnerable Tampa Bay team that struggled in Tom Brady’s final season. Fast forward to 2023 and the division door figures to once again be open for the Saints, who hope that a change at quarterback gets them over the hump. New Orleans had been in something of a transitional period since Drew Brees’ retirement; now Derek Carr is under center in an effort to stabilize the offense.

Are the Saints in line for their first division title since 2020? Let’s take a look at some of the odds and best bets to be made on the New Orleans Saints this year.

New Orleans Saints 2022 season recap

The Saints finished in a 3-way tie for second place in the NFC South at 7-10, just 1 game behind the Buccaneers (yes, Tom Brady and company won the division even with an 8-9 record). You could make the argument that it really wasn’t quite that close since Tampa Bay had already clinched the title prior to Week 18. However, it really was that close. The division pretty much all came down to a Week 13 Monday Night Football showdown in Tampa between the Saints and Bucs. New Orleans led 16-3 with less than 4 minutes remaining only to collapse down the stretch and lose 17-16. With Andy Dalton at QB, first-year head coach Dennis Allen’s team won 3 of its last 4 games thereafter but it wasn’t enough to overtake Tampa Bay.

New Orleans Saints 2023 NFL season predictions

The Saints missed out on the NFC South title by 1 game last season and fell short of a wild-card spot by 2 games. Their offense was to blame, as it averaged just 19.4 points per game. Will Carr’s arrival be just what the doctor ordered to improve that side of the ball and help out what is supposed to be another solid defense? Oddsmakers certainly think that will be the case.

Here are a couple of my predictions for the New Orleans Saints in 2023.

Best bet: New Orleans Saints to miss the playoffs (+160)

Those oddsmakers are definitely higher on the Saints than I am. This franchise has missed the playoffs in 2 straight seasons and Allen did not impress me in his first year as head coach. The defense was good but lost a whole host of guys in free agency. Even if New Orleans is just as stout defensively in 2023 as it was in 2022 (which is unlikely), the question — of course – is if Carr can turn this team around. Although it is true that Carr is a solid veteran quarterback, he is far from spectacular. In fact, he never won a single playoff game in 9 years with the Raiders and took them to the postseason only once. The bottom line is he isn’t a winner, and he probably doesn’t have enough help around him to win in New Orleans. I also like under 9.5 wins at -125, but missing the playoffs at +160 has better value.

New Orleans Saints season record predictions

Obviously it makes sense to correlate this pick with the above prediction of New Orleans to miss the playoffs. Getting to 9 wins may be enough to get the job done in the lackluster NFC South or it could land a wild card, but I don’t necessarily think the Saints will reach that number. A losing record wouldn’t surprise me in the least. I’ll go with 8-9, which has outstanding value as the Saints’ fourth-most likely outcome at +700 odds. I would sprinkle some on 7-10 at +850, as well.
