Sometimes one plays teams. Sometimes one plays numbers. This is the latter. Obviously, San Diego is the superior team. The Padres are headed toward October and with a win today they are locked in. The market is baking that in here but what about Miami? This is their last stand and dogs that have no tomorrow can be exceptionally live today, if their season literally rides on it. At this price and profile that makes the Fish a must play.
The Friars possess the better bullpen and, from a market perspective, Nick Pivetta probably gives them the perceived pitching advantage over Tyler Phillips. That's all well and good. But read the fine print. The total for this game is sitting at just 7.5 runs. That's what immediately grabs my attention. If the market is telling us runs are going to be scarce, why would I want to lay close to -200 with San Diego when I can hold a +178 ticket on Miami? Low-scoring baseball compresses margins. One swing, one defensive mistake, one timely hit or one bullpen hiccup can completely alter a game in which neither side is expected to score much. And Phillips is perfectly capable of keeping Miami within range. He's got a 3.55 ERA, so this isn't a situation where we're backing some sacrificial lamb against Pivetta. The Fish have also won 4 out of 5 including taking 2 of 3 from Arizona. So they know whats on the table here. San Diego is better. But that's precisely why we're being compensated with the Marlins' price tag. But in a low-scoring environment where variance becomes magnified, I'll take that equity. As said, sometimes you play the team. Today, I'm playing the number. Hands down. Fish or nothing.
