Luis Castillo has had a worrisome start to his 2026 campaign, posting a 6.35 ERA through his first 28.1 innings of work. Once a consistent innings eater, Castillo is averaging under 5 innings per start, surpassing that mark only in his season debut. In 5 April starts, he allowed 20 earned runs and 4 more unearned runs in 22.1 innings, while allowing 44 base runners and 4 home runs. His xBA, barrel rate and hard-hit rate are all 16th percentile or worse, and his 5.68 xERA is not much of an improvement. Despite striking out 14 times to Emerson Hancock yesterday, I think Kansas City can make contact against Castillo and do some damage today.

Kris Bubic has been decent so far in 2026, recording a 3.74 ERA in his first 33.2 innings of work. Unlike Castillo, Bubic has been able to work deeper into games, posting 3 quality starts within his first 6 attempts. With 35 strikeouts, the whiffs have been there, but 17 walks are too many for someone who isn’t generating ground balls. Still, Bubic is the stronger starter and draws a matchup against a Seattle lineup ranking 24th in wOBA against southpaw pitching. Lucas Erceg and Matt Strahm have each been used the last 2 days, and Seattle arguably has the better bullpen to begin with. Given this, I prefer backing Kansas City through the first 5 innings of play.
