Golf picks: RSM Classic best bets and predictions - Seamus Power could have the strength to succeed

Seamus Power plays his shot from the third tee during the first round of the BMW Championship golf tournament.

The final full-field tournament of the PGA Tour year, the RSM Classic, takes us to Sea Island Golf Club, Georgia, where things were blown wide open after betting favorite Tony Finau withdrew on Tuesday.

The RSM takes place on two courses — the field rotates between the Seaside Course and the easier Plantation Course over the first two rounds before the weekend action takes place on the Seaside. Form by the coast is an important factor worth considering.

We’ll be targeting two 2022 PGA Tour winners who both look well suited to this assignment – Seamus Power and Mackenzie Hughes.

Seamus Power (+2500)

Power claimed a second Tour title with victory at the Bermuda Championship, a win which put the Irishman firmly in the European Ryder Cup picture. He then followed that by finishing 3rd at Mayakoba the following week – with both events taking place by the coast.

He finished 4th in the 2021 RSM, offering proof that the RSM courses suit him down to the ground, and he should be raring to go again following a week off.

Mackenzie Hughes (+4000)

Available at DraftKings Sportsbook at time of publishing

Hughes, meanwhile, won the Sanderson Farms in October, ending a 6-year victory drought stretching back to the 2016 RSM Classic. The short-game wizard was runner-up to LIV Golf defector Talor Gooch in the RSM last season and a solid 16th in Houston last week.

Patrick Rodgers (+4500)

Available at DraftKings at time of publishing

Patrick Rodgers has played well at Sea Island, losing a playoff to Charles Howell III in 2018, the closest he has come to a PGA Tour victory. He returns with PGA Tour form figures of 28-16-3-27-16 from his last 5 events.

Will Gordon (+6600)

Available at BetMGM at time of publishing

Sea Island resident Will Gordon, a North Carolina native who lives on the golfing hotbed, could fare best of the ‘home’ contingent – he was 3rd in Mayakoba and 10th on RSM debut in 2019.

Austin Cook (+15000)

Available at DraftKings at time of publishing

Former champion Austin Cook has shown signs of life over the last three weeks, recording top-30 finishes at Mayakoba and Houston, and he could also outperform the odds.
