The Jacksonville Jaguars are the reigning AFC South champions, but they are already five games back of the division leading Houston Texans and with only five more games to play they will not repeat as the division champions. This article will look at all four teams within the division and examine each team’s chances of winning the division as well as making the playoffs. We will start by looking at the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The Jacksonville Jaguars are 3-8 on the season and are 5 games back of the Houston Texans within the division. The Jaguars had a great season last year and came within one game of the Super Bowl. This season they won’t even make the playoffs and are almost certain to finish under .500 on the season. The Jaguars remaining opponents are the Colts, Titans, Redskins, Dolphins and Texans. They are likely to be underdogs in each of those games and are likely to finish the season with double digit losses.
Of the remaining three teams on the board that are still available to bet are the Tennessee Titans who are 5-6 on the season and 3 games back of the Texans within the division. They split the season series with the Texans with each team winning at home. The Texans are 2-2 in the division and their remaining opponents on the season are the Jets, Jaguars, Giants, Redskins and Colts. The Titans could win all of their remaining games as they will likely only be an underdog to the Colts, but already being three games back of the Texans within the division it will be tough for them to make up that much ground with only five games left to play. I look for the Titans to challenge for one of the two wildcard spots though.
The Indianapolis Colts have developed into a good team that has shown improvements this past few weeks on defense. The Colts are 6-5 on the season and are 2 games back of the Texans within the division and lost the first meeting of the series at home earlier in the season. They still face the Texans one more time this season, but that game will be on the road. The Colts have won five games in a row though and their remaining opponents are the Jaguars, Texans, Cowboys, Giants and Titans and are likely to be favored in all of those games except against the Texans on the road. With the Colts already 2 games back of the Texans next week’s game in Houston will likely decide whether they have any chance of winning the division and I think they will lose that game. The Colts are a good enough team to make the playoffs and I think they will, but it will be as a wildcard team.
The Houston Texans are huge favorites to win the AFC South this season at 1:6 which means you would have to bet $60 in order to win $10 if you were to bet on them at this point in the season to win the division. The Texans are one of the hottest teams in the NFL after winning eight games in a row. Their remaining opponents are the Browns, Colts, Jets, Eagles and Jaguars and are likely to be favored in all of those games except for their game on the road against the Eagles. The Texans are heavy division favorites and they should win the division as they should finish with around 12-13 wins.
The Houston Texans have a steep price tag if you want to bet on them to win the division. They will win the division that’s a guarantee as they have the best defense within the division as well as one of the better offenses in the NFL. I look for them to wrap up the division with a win against the Colts at home in week 14.
