KBO picks and predictions

Thursday’s slate features plenty of opportunities for value. Let’s dive into the day’s best bets.

Hanwha Eagles ML (+130) over Kia Tigers

The Kia Tigers beat the Hanwha Eagles 6-3 on Wednesday morning. The Tigers are now 48-45-1 in 2022 and are currently still in 5th place in the league standings. They will start Yang Hyeon-Jong, who is 10-4 and has an ERA of 3.03. In 20 starts Hyeon-Jong has allowed 40 earned runs over 119.0 innings.

With the loss on Wednesday, the Eagles are now 29-64-2 and remain in last place by a wide margin. They will counter with Yefry Ramirez, who is 1-1 on the season and has an ERA of 1.39. In 6 starts he has allowed 5 earned runs over 32.1 innings.

Backing the Eagles this season has usually been a bad idea given how poor their overall record is. However, Ramirez has emerged as one of their best pitchers and one of the better pitchers in the KBO as a whole, as well. For that reason backing Hanwha to pull off the upset will be the play on Thursday morning.

LG Twins vs Lotte Giants – Under 9.5 runs (-102)

The total looks to be the better play based on the current form of both starters. In his last 5 starts, Park Se-Woong has allowed 13 runs (11 earned) over 29.1 innings. In his only starts against the Twins, he has allowed 1 earned run over 6.0 innings. Overall, he has allowed 4 or more runs in 6 starts but has only allowed more than 4 runs in just 1 of his last 5.

On the other side, Kim Yun-Sik has allowed 4 or more runs in 4 starts this season. In his last 5 starts, he has allowed 12 earned runs over 23.1 innings. The only reason why he has allowed that many runs over his last 5 starts in that he recently had a start last just 1.0 innings, however; that should not happen here against the Twins. Also, in 2 starts against the Giants he has allowed 4 earned runs over 11.0 innings. Because both starters have had some success recently, backing the under will be the play.

Kiwoom Heroes ML (-150) over SSG Landers

The Kiwoom Heroes picked up a win on Wednesday morning, beating the SSG Landers by a score of 3-2. The Heroes are now 58-37-2 and are still in 2nd place in the league standings. They will start Eric Jokisch, who is 8-5 and has an ERA of 2.36. In 19 starts he has allowed 31 earned runs over 118.1 innings.

With the loss on Wednesday, the SSG Landers are now 64-29-3 on the season. They are still in 1st place though by a healthy 7 games. The SSG Landers will counter with Lee Tae-Yang, who is 6-3 this year and has an ERA of 3.51. In 20 appearances (14 starts) the has allowed 36 earned runs over 92.1 innings.

The SSG Landers might be the best team in the KBO, but Jokisch has been a much better pitcher. He has been more consistent on the season as a whole, therefore backing the Heroes will be the play.

Bonus KBO picks and predictions for Thursday, August 4

KT Wiz ML (-136) over NC Dinos

The NC Dinos were crushed on Wednesday morning, losing to the KT Wiz by a score of 15-2 despite having the better starter in that game. They now are at a pitching disadvantage on Thursday as they will be starting Song Myung-Gi, who has an ERA of 5.32. The KT Wiz will counter with Wes Benjamin, who has an ERA of 3.23. Therefore backing the KT Wiz to win will be the play.

Samsung Lions ML (-118) over Doosan Bears

The Doosan Bears beat the Samsung Lions by a score of 3-1 on Wednesday morning. The pitching matchup for Thursday is by no means great, but the Lions will start Won Tae-In, who has an ERA of 3.60, while Lee Young-Ha has an ERA of 4.37. For that reason, backing the Lions looks to be worth a play.
