KBO picks and predictions

Thursday’s slate features plenty of opportunities for value. Let’s dive into the day’s best bets.

Doosan Bears vs Kiwoom Heroes ML (-118)

The Doosan Bears won their 2nd consecutive game on Wednesday, beating the Kiwoom Heroes by a score of 5-1. They are now 19-14 on the season and are in 3rd place in the league standings. The Bears could be in a tough spot-on Thursday though, seeing that they are projected to start Park Shin-Zi. He has not recorded a decision this season, but has an ERA of 12.27. In 3 appearances (1 start), Shin-Zi has allowed 5 earned runs over 3.2 innings. In 2 relief appearances against the Heroes, Shin-Zi has allowed 1 earned run over 1.2 innings.

With the loss on Wednesday, the Kiwoom Heroes are now 17-17 and have lost 4 games in a row. They are tied for 5th place but look to be in a good bounce-back spot, seeing that they will start Jeong Chan-Heon. He is 3-1 on the year and has an ERA of 3.46. In 5 starts Chan-Heon has allowed 10 earned runs over 26.0 innings.

Shin-Zi does not have much of a sample size this season, but in the innings he has pitched he has struggled. Chan-Heon on the other hand, has been consistent enough through his 5 starts to believe he can give his team a chance to win here. For that reason, backing the Heroes will be the play.

KT Wiz vs Kia Tigers ML (-116)

The KT Wiz got a nice win on Wednesday, crushing the Kia Tigers by a score of 10-5. The KT Wiz are now 16-17 on the season and are in 7th place in the league standings. They will be scheduled to start Odrisamer Despaigne on Thursday morning, who is 2-3 on the season and has an ERA of 3.10. In 7 starts this season, he has allowed 14 earned runs over 40.2 innings. Despaigne does have 1 start against the Tigers, where he allowed 3 earned runs over 6.0 innings.

With the loss on Wednesday the Tigers are now 16-17, as well, and are tied for 7th place in the standings. They will counter with Han Seung-Hyuk, who is 2-0 on the season and has an ERA of 2.12. in 5 starts Seung-Hyuk has allowed 5 earned runs over 29.2 innings.

Both of these teams are below average this year, but the slight pitching advantage for the Tigers looks to be the biggest difference. For that reason, backing the Tigers will be the play.

NC Dinos vs Lotte Giants ML (-142)

The NC Dinos lost their 7th game in a row on Wednesday to fall to 9-25 on the season. They are clearly the worst team in the KBO right now and Thursday does not look to be a good spot for them either. The Dinos will start Shin Min-Hyeok, who is 0-4 on the season and has an ERA of 8.20. In 4 starts this season, Min-Hyeok has allowed 17 earned runs over 18.2 innings. He has faced the Giants once this season, allowing 2 earned runs over 6.0 innings.

With the win on Wednesday, the Giants have now won 2 games in a row and are 18-14-1. They are sitting in 4th place in the standings and have a great opportunity to sweep the Dinos on Thursday and make it 3 wins in a row. The Giants will counter with Lee In-Bok, who is 3-3 and has an ERA of 3.06. In 7 appearances (5 starts), In-Bok has allowed 11 earned runs over 32.1 innings. He has faced the Dinos once this season, allowing 1 earned run over 4.2 innings.

The Dinos are in a freefall right now and we should not expect them to turn things around anytime soon. Min-Hyeok has struggled for most of the 2022 campaign, while In-Bok has been consistent. For that reason, backing the Giants has to be the play.
