MLB Best Bets for Tuesday, June 6 from Pickswise expert handicapper Mark Zinno

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Freddy Peralta (51) throws a pitch in the first inning against the Chicago Cubs at American Family Field.

We have a big day of MLB action on Tuesday with no NBA or NHL games tonight and I’ve picked out the 3 plays I like most on today’s baseball slate.

Today I am looking at a couple of money line picks, and a first-innings bet, so let’s get into the reasoning behind those picks. Remember to also check out our MLB predictions for the whole of Tuesday’s slate.

Yankees ML over White Sox (-146, FanDuel)

The Yankees and White Sox open up a 3-game series in the Bronx tonight. The Yankees have won 6 of their last 8 and 11 of 16. They are mashing the baseball right now, scoring more than 5 runs per game over their last 16 and have hit 30 home runs over that span. They will need to do that tonight when they send Clarke Schmidt to the mound. Schmidt is 2-5 with a 5.01 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP. But he had a much better May overall with a 3.52 ERA and gave up 2 or fewer runs in 5 of his 6 starts in May. He has also struck out 65 batters in 55.2 innings pitched this season.

The White Sox counter with Lucas Giolito. I thought Giolito was going to turn a corner in May but he did not. He posted an ERA over 4 in the month and gave up a home run in every start he made, while walking 15 batters in 33.2 innings. On the road this season Giolito has been terrible. His 5.68 ERA is double that of his ERA at home and opposing hitters are batting .292 against him and he’s allowing an OPS of .852 facing hitters the first time through the order. That’s a bad recipe against the Yankees. With the White Sox bullpen being one of the worst in the league, I actually want them in play and am willing to bet the Yankees tack on some late runs to cover the 1.5 on the run line, but to play it safe, the money line is a manageable price to back New York here.

Diamondbacks ML over Nationals (-135, Caesars)

The Diamondbacks are in DC to face the Nationals after both teams had a day off yesterday. Arizona will send their second-best starter to the mound as they give the ball to Tommy Henry. Henry’s road splits look bad, but that’s really based on one start. He’s made only 3 road starts this season and a road game against Oakland was the lone start where he didn’t get to at least 5 innings. Henry has already faced the Nats this year and went 6 innings, giving up just 2 runs.

The Nationals counter with Jake Irvin. Irvin has been bad and at home he’s been downright terrible. He has an ERA of 7.47 and he’s got a WHIP of 1.82. He also struggles against lefties. The Diamondbacks have a very heavy left-handed hitting lineup and lead MLB in RBIs by lefty batters against right-handed pitching. However, the Nationals hit lefties very well and lead MLB in hits vs LHP. Still, the Nats have lost the last 4 starts that Irvin has made and I expect more of the same. Both bullpens are shaky, but the Nats is worse, so I’ll go with Arizona on the money line.

NRFI in Orioles vs Brewers (-110, DraftKings)

The Orioles and Brewers begin a series in Milwaukee tonight. We get a pair of starters who are quite effective on the mound. Kyle Gibson goes for Baltimore, while the Brewers give the ball to Freddy Peralta. The Brewers’ offense has been bad over the last 10 games with a .188 average and they have been outscored by 14 runs.

The Orioles haven’t been too much better, batting just .229 over their last 10 games. Baltimore is 3rd-to-last in MLB in first-inning runs scored this season. Even though Milwaukee is top 10 overall in first-inning runs scored, I’ll ride this cold streak that their bats are on in a game I expect to go under the total, and look to a No Run First Inning between these teams.
