World Cup pick today: Switzerland vs Portugal – Under 2.5 goals (-140), 2:00 pm ET

Switzerland won a high-scoring game 3-2 to secure a spot in the World Cup round of 16, but its solid defense means that games with fewer goals are more typical. Five of its last 8 games have gone under 2.5 goals and the Swiss are likely to sit deep against a dangerous Portugal team, looking to strike with a counter-attack. These teams have met twice already this year and the most recent meeting was a 1-0 win for Switzerland, from which the underdogs should take plenty of confidence.

Portugal, head coach Fernando Santos is famous for his cautious style of play and he looks unlikely to take any major risks in this encounter. For that reason, backing the under 2.5 goals will be the play.

NHL pick today: New Jersey Devils -1.5 over Chicago Blackhawks (-140), 7:00 pm ET

The Devils experienced one of their few losses this season on Thursday, but bounced back with a victory on Saturday. That brought them to 20 wins on the season, something only the Boston Bruins can also say. It’s difficult to argue that New Jersey has been the surprise story of the NHL, and the Devils should extend their lead in the Metro Division tonight. While the Devils are surging, the Blackhawks couldn’t be sinking any faster. After a defeat to the Islanders on Sunday, they’ve lost 11 of their last 13 games. These teams are heading in opposite directions and that should be on full display tonight, therefore backing the Devils to win comfortably will be the play.

NBA pick today: Los Angeles Lakers vs Cleveland Cavaliers – Over 225.5 points (-110), 7:30 pm ET

One of the reasons for the recent success of the Lakers has been their scoring – 4 of their last 5 games have gone over the total and in their last 3 wins they’ve put up an average of 130.3 points. Granted, Cleveland’s defense is a lot better than the likes of Washington, Milwaukee and Portland, but when a team is scoring this well, it’s going to be hard to slow them down.

Cleveland plays at the slowest pace in the NBA, and that’s something they’ll look to use, but even if that doesn’t work they still have the capacity to run with the Lakers. Seven of the teams’ last 8 meetings in Cleveland have gone over, as have 13 of the last 18 between these teams overall. For that reason, backing the over will be the play.

College Basketball pick today: Maryland Terrapins +1.5 vs Wisconsin Badgers (-105), 9:00 pm ET

Wisconsin has been great in the Kohl Center over the years, but is not talented enough to slow down this Maryland offense. According to KenPom, Maryland is ranked 12th in adjusted offensive efficiency and 9th in 2-point percentage.

Wisconsin has been better than people thought this season with wins against Stanford, Marquette and Dayton, but they also lost to Wake Forest at home which lowers expectations for them. Wisconsin may not be able to keep up offensively as they rank 347th in 2-point percentage and 264th in effective field-goal percentage according to KenPom. Maryland is the better overall team in this matchup, therefore backing the Terrapins will be the play.
