World Cup pick today: Poland +0.5 over Argentina (+190), 2:00 pm ET

Argentina fans will have breathed a massive sigh of relief after their team defeated Mexico 2-0 on Saturday but their joy could turn to despair when the Albiceleste take on Group C leaders Poland at Stadium 974 in Doha.

Poland may be ready to step up after Robert Lewandowski’s first World Cup goal helped to secure Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Saudi Arabia. The Poles played effectively on the counter-attack against the Saudis and will probably try to utilize similar tactics against Argentina. Czeslaw Michniewicz’s team need only a tie to make sure of a place in the round of 16, so a Poland or tie double-chance wager looks to be worth a play.

NHL pick today: Toronto Maple Leafs -1.5 over San Jose Sharks (-115), 7:00 pm ET

Auston Matthews and the Maple Leafs have won each of their last 6 road games and the last 4 games overall. After taking down the Detroit Red Wings on Monday night, they get to head back home to Toronto to take on the Sharks.

The Sharks are allowing over 3.5 goals per game, while Toronto has the league’s 4th-best goaltending, allowing just 2.54 goals per game. With San Jose on a back-to-back, that only amplifies that discrepancy even more. Regardless of who is in net, neither goaltender has been strong. Starter James Reimer is 5-8 on the year, and backup Kaapo Kahkonen is just 2-5 with an abysmal .871 save percentage. The Leafs have protected goalie Matt Murray well by allowing less than 30 shots per game. For that reason, backing the Maple Leafs to win this one convincingly will be the play.

NBA pick today: Atlanta Hawks -6 over Orlando Magic (-110), 7:10 pm ET

The Atlanta Hawks currently find themselves on a 3-game losing streak but should have a great opportunity to bounce back tonight against a Orlando Magic team who have lost 5 straight. The Hawks were able to beat the Magic by a 10-point margin earlier in the season and should be well positioned to achieve something similar tonight.

Over the last 5 games, only the San Antonio Spurs have a worse net offensive and defensive rating than the Orlando Magic. Their offense in particular is likely to struggle here. If the Hawks can stop Cole Anthony from initiating the Magics offense, the hosts are unlikely to score enough points tonight to stay competitive in this one. For that reason, backing the Hawks to cover will be the play.

College Basketball pick today: Michigan State Spartans -2.5 over Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-110), 9:15 pm ET

The Michigan State Spartans travel to South Bend for a date with the Fighting Irish in the Big 10-ACC Challenge on Wednesday night. The Spartans have had a great start to the year despite a challenging schedule, as they are 5-2 straight up with wins over Kentucky, Villanova, Oregon, and a pesky Portland team on its home floor to go along with narrow losses to Gonzaga in the Carrier Classic and Alabama during Feast Week.

The Fighting Irish come into this contest off their first loss of the season, but they have not played anywhere near the level of opponent that the Spartans have. Their strength of schedule ranks 318th per KenPom, while Michigan State’s ranks 7th. Despite a 5-1 overall record, Notre Dame is a poor defensive team. They give up 0.970 points per possession, which is a bit alarming considering their wins have been over Radford, Youngstown State, Southern Indiana, Lipscomb, and Bowling Green – none of which rank in the top 60 in KenPom’s adjusted offensive efficiency.

Considering the difference in resumes and Notre Dame’s poor defensive performances in the half court, the Spartans seem to be undervalued in this particular matchup. For that reason, backing the Spartans will be the play tonight.
