This year’s Super Bowl matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles is not exactly anything new, with the Chiefs appearing for the 3rd time in the last 4 years, while the Eagles won on their most recent appearance in 2017.

The teams have 7 previous Super Bowl appearances and 3 wins between them. That doesn’t put them right at the front of the field in terms of NFL success, but it’s pretty good in comparison to many other teams who have never won or even played in a Super Bowl in their history.

Let’s take a look at those teams who are already moving onto next season with dreams of winning their first Super Bowl.

How many NFL teams have never won a Super Bowl?

Of the current 32 NFL teams, 12 have never won a Super Bowl. That means that the other 20 franchises have at least one win each. The most recent team to be added to the list of winners was the Philadelphia Eagles, who got their first win at the 3rd attempt in 2017. That means we won’t be seeing a new name on the roll of honor this year, as both participants are former winners.

The Bengals had a chance to become the 21st different Super Bowl winners last year, but suffered their 3rd Super Bowl defeat when taking on the Los Angeles Rams. The previous team to win their first Super Bowl before the Eagles had been the Seattle Seahawks in 2013.

The Jets and Saints each managed to win the Super Bowl the only time they have played in the game, while the Cardinals, Chargers and Titans all lost in their only Super Bowl appearance.

DraftKings Sportsbook has every market you could wish to bet on for the Chiefs vs Eagles Super Bowl, PLUS a great new customer offer where you can bet $5 and get $200 in bonus bets. Click here to use this great sign-up offer.

All-time Super Bowl appearances by each team

The Texans, Jaguars, Lions and Browns all have 0 Super Bowl appearances while the teams seen most often in the NFL’s end-of-season title decider are the New England Patriots, who have appeared in 11 Super Bowls. The Steelers, Cowboys and Broncos are tied for 2nd place with 8 appearances each.

This year’s Super Bowl 57 participants, the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles, are both in the middle of the pack, with the Chiefs due to make their 5th appearance this year — although there was a 50-year game between their second Super Bowl in 1969 and their 3rd in 2019. The Eagles have played in 3 previous Super Bowls, with 1 win.

Which NFL teams have the fewest Super Bowl appearances in NFL history?

Four current teams — the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars and Houston Texans — have not played in the NFL’s championship-deciding game in the Super Bowl era. The Browns and Lions can be placed in a separate category to the other teams, however, as they were both NFL champions before the first Super Bowl was played on January 15, 1967.

The Browns were in fact one of the NFL’s most successful franchises in the 1950s and 1960s, being NFL champions in 1950, 1954, 1955 and 1964 and appearing in 7 other NFL championship games between 1951 and 1969. Although the Browns ownership moved the team to Baltimore after the 1995 season, the current Browns franchise, which resumed operations in Cleveland in 1999, is considered to have the history of the old Browns club.

The Lions were also NFL champions 4 times before the Super Bowl era, winning in 1935, 1952, 1953 and 1957. They also lost 56-10 to the Browns in the 1954 Championship game.

The Jaguars and Texans don’t have old-time success to boast about, but they do have the excuse of having had fewer chances than most other teams to reach a Super Bowl as they are both relatively new franchises. The Jaguars started out in 1995 and have reached 3 AFC Championship games since then, while the Texans started life in 2002 but have never got past the divisional round of the playoffs.
