I'm an NFL handicapper here at Pickswise who was raised in a household full of sports fanatics. Since I unfortunately never had LeBron James' jumping ability I wasn't able to make it to the NBA, and chose writing about sports as the next best thing. An avid sports bettor myself, I'm excited to get to write about the industry as it gets set to take off across the country. Buckle up. Good morning Pickswise Nation and welcome to Wise n’ Shine, your one-stop shop for everything you need to know to bet better today! And what a day it is with a huge slate of college football to enjoy, plus MLB, UFC, and US Open tennis. Let’s get right to it!

About Last Night

College Football Week 1 doesn’t disappoint
We had a massive slate of college football on Saturday, and the action was jam-packed. Penn State took down Wisconsin on the road in a thriller that came down to the final seconds, while Alabama dominated Miami in one of the day’s other clashes between ranked teams. In MLB, the Red Sox won their fourth straight game to keep the A’s, Mariners, and Blue Jays at bay in the race for the American League’s second and final wild card spot. Boston now has a lead of four games with about a month to go.

Today’s Slate

We’ve still got one college football game
The Week 1 mega-slate is mostly in the books, but not entirely. There’s still one big college football game to look forward to on Sunday (and one on Monday as well). Florida State will host Notre Dame here at 7:30pm ET on ABC. We have a 2-star play on the spread in that game, which you can see in our full game preview.

MLB fills up the afternoon
It’s a Sunday, which means we’ll be treated to a ton of early MLB games. Baseball will fill up much of the afternoon, as 10 of the day’s 15 games will start by or before 2:20pm ET. The highlight of the slate is the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers wrapping up their pivotal NL West series on Sunday Night Baseball. Be sure to read our picks for each of today’s matchups.

US Open enters Round of 16
The U.S. Open tennis field is starting to winnow. The third round is in the books, and the Round of 16 for both the men and women will begin on Sunday. Our tennis expert Ricky Dimon is back with his best bets of the day’s action. Check out Sunday’s tennis picks here.

Best Bet of the Day

New York Mets @ Washington Nationals over 8.5 (-110)
1:05pm ET

These teams just played a doubleheader on Saturday, and there were 27 total runs scored across 14 innings. Even if they slow down rather sharply, we can still cash this over. Mets starter Taijuan Walker has been mostly awful recently after getting off to a hot start, and has given up at least three earned runs in six of his past eight starts. Washington has given up at least six runs in each of their last five full games, and the Nationals’ bullpen has an ERA around 7.00 over the past week. The Nats will also start Josiah Gray here, a 23-year-old rookie who got rocked for six earned runs his last time out. Check out our full preview for Mets vs Nationals.

Stat of the Day

The Cincinnati Reds are just 10-18 when Luis Castillo starts this season. Yet oddsmakers are still giving him quite a bit of respect, making the Reds -220 favorites over the Tigers on Sunday. Castillo has only gotten 1 run of run support in 3 of his past 4 outings. Check out our full preview of Detroit Tigers vs Cincinnati Reds.

Must-read

There’s a lot to digest from the first weekend of college football, so be sure to check out our three biggest takeaways from the initial action and what they mean for the betting landscape moving forward. The start of the NFL regular season is in just a few days, so don’t miss Prop Bet Guy’s favorite player prop play for the opening Thursday Night Football game between the Cowboys and Buccaneers! Boost of the day

Notre Dame to win both the first quarter and the game vs Florida State

The aforementioned showdown between Florida State and Notre Dame is what most bettors will be watching on Sunday night, and FanDuel Sportsbook has boosted the odds on this prop bet from +155 to +210. That’s a significant boost for the Fighting Irish to win both the first quarter and the whole game.
