Reasoning

The Arizona Cardinals travel to Cincinnati, Ohio, for a Week 17 matchup against the Bengals, and like a few other games on Sunday’s slate, both teams are only fighting for draft position. These squads had higher hopes entering the season, and while the Cardinals dropped another game last week against the Falcons, the Bengals got back in the win column with a 45-21 victory against the Dolphins. Although Arizona lost its 7th straight game, the Cards can put together a solid performance this week. First off, they’ve played fairly well against teams below .500 this season. They’re 2-3 in those games, but their 3 losses have come by 1 against the Titans, 3 against the Bucs and 7 against the Falcons. Now, they’ll go up against a Bengals team that is tied for last in the NFL in yards allowed per pass attempt (7.8) and 30th in yards allowed per rush attempt (5.3).

On the flip side, this Bengals team hasn’t been able to gain any momentum this season, as they’re just 1-3 after a victory. They only won back-to-back games in Weeks 1 and 2, and even though they dominated the Dolphins last week on offense, their defense was shaky yet again. Rookie QB Quinn Ewers threw for 260 yards, and three different Dolphins running backs found the end zone. Additionally, Cincinnati was a perfect 6-6 in the red zone with Burrow throwing for 4 passing TDs, but that type of success isn’t prolonged for bad teams. Teams that go 6-6 or better in the red zone the previous week are just 1-5 ATS in their next game when they’re a 6-point favorite or more since 2007.

Burrow is just 4-8 ATS in his career when he’s a 7-point favorite or higher, and he’s actually just 7-5 straight up in those games. While he’s been awesome as an underdog, he doesn’t typically live up to the hype as a big favorite. Therefore, I’ll back the Cardinals to keep this game within one touchdown.

Reasoning

Although this game doesn’t mean too much, it will be worth watching because it’s the highest total on the Week 17 slate. There’s a good chance we get 54 points or more in Cincinnati. I already highlighted how poor this Bengals defense is, but it’s worth mentioning that this Arizona defense isn’t much better. The Cardinals are giving up 27.6 PPG (29th), 4.5 yards per carry (T-25th), and 6.8 yards per pass attempt (T-22nd), while ranking 24th in red-zone defense. During their current 7-game losing streak, they’ve allowed 41+ points 4 times and are giving up 34.7 PPG. They even allowed Kirk Cousins to put up 26 against them at home.

As ugly as it’s been for Arizona, Cincinnati’s defense has been even worse. They allow a league-worst 33.0 PPG at home and have only allowed 24 points or fewer THREE times this entire season. Although the Cardinals have dropped 7 straight, it hasn’t been without trying. QB Jacoby Brissett has been a cash cow to the over, as he’s gone 28-18 to the over in games he’s started since 2019 — which is the 2nd-best mark in the NFL (only Dak Prescott has been better). Additionally, the over is a combined 18-12 in these squads’ 30 combined games this season, and they’ve both seen at least 54 points in 2 of their last 3 games. I’m not sure how either defense will get a stop this Sunday, so I’ll root for points and back Over 53.5 in Cincinnati on Sunday.
