Browns vs Raiders Pickswise Expert Predictions

Point Spread Pick
LV Raiders -4.0(-110)

It’s a matchup between 2 of the league’s most pitiful teams as the Las Vegas Raiders host the Cleveland Browns. While this game doesn’t have playoff implications, it does have a fair amount of intrigue as it’ll be the first career start for Shedeur Sanders — who takes over under center for Cleveland after Joe Flacco was traded and Dillon Gabriel got hurt. Sanders saw his first action in relief of Gabriel last week, and to say it was a tough debut would be putting it very kindly.

Sanders was a disaster, finishing just 4-of-16 for 47 yards with multiple turnovers and 2 sacks. He looked overwhelmed during the preseason, and there’s a reason he was a fifth-round pick. Now he is facing an underrated Raiders defense, and I think Maxx Crosby is going to eat him alive. Las Vegas has been a big disappointment this season, but there’s a large juxtaposition with a longtime veteran quarterback like Geno Smith going up against a rookie making his first career start in an anemic offense.

I don’t have any faith in Sanders — but even if I did, I would still hate his chances here behind a bad offensive line and with very few weapons at his disposal. Jerry Jeudy isn’t a #1 receiver in this league, and there’s no ground game to speak of. Cleveland is 0-5 on the road this season, with 4 of those 5 losses coming by at least 14 points. The only loss that was within 14 points was a 7-point defeat at the hands of the lowly Jets. The Raiders have had a really tough schedule this year and have already lost multiple games by just 1 point. I don’t think they’re as bad as their record indicates, and they should be able to cover.

I am also playing the under since I don’t see the Browns scoring much at all. The Browns don’t score much even when everything is going right on offense, and I certainly don’t expect that to be the case with Shedeur Sanders making his first career start. Sanders made it abundantly clear that he isn’t anywhere close to being ready to start last week when he went 4-of-16 in relief, and I think he’ll be running for his life from Maxx Crosby.

Cleveland has scored 17 or fewer points in 8 of its 10 games this season, and now it has downgraded at quarterback — so there truly is no floor. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if it is held to single-digits. The Browns’ leading receiver on the year is a rookie tight end who wasn’t even the starter to begin with, which tells you everything you need to know about their offense. The Raiders, on the other hand, have been held to 16 or fewer points in 3 of their last 4 games and Cleveland still has a lot of talent on defense — most notably Myles Garrett. I think points will be at a premium.
