The San Francisco 49ers (8-4) picked up consecutive victories for the first time since Weeks 2 and 3 in Monday’s 20-9 home win over Carolina. The Niners went through a nine-game stretch of alternating wins and losses heading into last Monday, coming off a 41-22 blowout of Arizona. QB Brock Purdy overcame three interceptions against the Panthers to win his second consecutive start after missing six games with a toe injury. For only the second time this season, San Francisco grabbed consecutive covers, cashing as 7.5-point favorites on Monday.

The Niners square off with the Cleveland Browns (3-8), who snapped a three-game slide in Sunday’s 24-10 triumph over the struggling Raiders. The storyline centered around rookie QB Shedeur Sanders making his first start for Cleveland. Sanders finished with 208 passing yards, including a 66-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Sampson to put the game away in the fourth quarter. Cleveland’s defense sacked Raiders QB Geno Smith 10 times, as the Browns have held all three teams to fewer than 10 points in all three victories.

The key for Cleveland to have a shot against San Francisco is to have the defense step up, because the Browns aren’t winning a shootout. The Browns are 0-8 straight-up and 2-6 against the spread when allowing 17 or more points, while the Niners are 4-2 when scoring 20 or fewer points. San Francisco has also taken care of business as a road favorite at 4-1 SU and ATS, but is looking to avenge a 19-17 defeat in Cleveland in October of the 2023 season. The Browns have covered all four games at home this season, while the 49ers are listed at their highest price as a road favorite.

The Browns have been one of the worst offenses in the NFL this season, averaging 16.9 points per game, ranking 29th. Cleveland will turn to its defense to slow down San Francisco, who has scored 20 points or less in three of four games in which Brock Purdy has started. The Browns and 49ers are each allowing less than 22 points per game, as Sunday’s total is down to 36.5.

Cleveland has given up 17 points or less in three of four home games, while the Under is 2-2 in those contests. However, the two Overs came with totals of 34.5 against Miami (31-6 win) and 38 against Baltimore (23-16 loss). The Browns are coming off a great defensive effort against the inept Raiders, 24-10, as Cleveland is 3-1 to the Under when holding teams to 17 or less points. The 49ers are 3-1 to the Under in Purdy’s four starts, capped off by the 20-9 win over the Panthers last Monday. Interestingly, San Francisco is 5-1-1 to the Over on the road, but Purdy is responsible for only one of those Overs at Arizona two weeks ago.

The previous lowest total for the Niners this season came in Week 2 at New Orleans, as the game hit the Over of 40.5 in a 26-21 victory. There is a high chance of snow in Cleveland this week and temperatures to fall to mid-30’s for Sunday’s kickoff. We’ll see how 49ers RB Christian McCaffrey fares against a Cleveland rushing defense that is the top-graded unit in the league according to PFF. McCaffrey has finished above 80 rushing yards in three of the last four games, but is averaging 63.8 yards per game on the road.
