TEN Titans +8.5(-110)

First overall pick Cam Ward will make his NFL debut here as the Tennessee Titans head to Denver to take on the Broncos in Week 1. Denver is a tough environment for a rookie quarterback to debut in, but there’s no way I can lay 9 points with Bo Nix in an opener either. I wasn’t as excited by Nix’s rookie campaign as many were last season, and just look at who Denver’s last 9 wins came against last year.

A Chiefs team resting all their starters in Week 18, the Colts, Browns, Raiders, Falcons, Panthers, Saints, Raiders, Jets. Their 10-7 season doesn’t look as impressive when you unpack it. The Titans weren’t as bad as their record indicated last year, and they lost a ton of winnable games because of mind-boggling Will Levis turnovers at crucial moments. Even if Ward isn’t the savior of the franchise, he’s not going to throw as many games away as Levis did last year.

The Broncos are still pretty light at the skill positions, and a 1-2 receiver combo of Courtland Sutton and Marvin Mims certainly isn’t anything to write home about. One of Denver’s big offseason moves was signing linebacker Dre Greenlaw to a 3-year/$35 million deal, but Greenlaw just got ruled out for this one with an oblique injury. Tennessee signed Tyler Lockett to go alongside Calvin Ridley, and a couple of longtime veteran receivers is exactly what someone like Ward needs in their first career start.

The under also makes sense here for a few reasons. Cam Ward isn’t just making his first career NFL start here, he’s making it on the road in Denver where even a lot of veterans struggle with the crowd noise and elevation. Teams early in the season especially can get sluggish in Denver, as their lungs aren’t in great shape. Tennessee has a sneakily underrated defense, and a ton of talent upfront.

Jeffery Simmons is still one of the best defensive tackles in the game, and I like their other linemen and linebackers. The Broncos invested heavily in their defense this offseason, bringing in safety Talanoa Hufanga from the 49ers in addition to Dre Greenlaw. Tennessee is going to feature a heavy dose of Tony Pollard here to make things easy on Ward, and points are going to be at a premium.

Tennessee Titans vs Denver Broncos prediction: Under 42.5 (-110) available at time of publishing. Playable at that number.
