The question here is not whether this is a pitching mismatch, it absolutely is. Nor is it a question of whether the Pittsburgh Pirates are likely to win this game with Paul Skenes on the mound. They probably will and the -300-plus price reflects that. The real question is whether enough offense gets generated overall to push this total beyond 7.5 runs. That’s where the Under becomes attractive.

Colorado’s offense has struggled for much of the season, especially away from the comfort of Coors Field, and now they draw arguably the worst possible assignment in baseball. Skenes has the type of arsenal that can completely neutralize weaker lineups. The man after all is a Cy Young winner. With elite velocity, swing-and-miss stuff, and the ability to work deep into games, Skenes is more than capable of putting up seven dominant innings while keeping the Colorado Rockies almost entirely off the board. And if Colorado is held to one or two runs at most (which may not even happen), the burden shifts heavily onto Pittsburgh’s offense. The Pirates have shown flashes offensively this season, but they are hardly a consistent powerhouse. This is still a lineup prone to dry spells and stretches where run production simply disappears. Even in favorable matchups, Pittsburgh can leave runners stranded and fail to fully capitalize.

That’s the key to this handicap: there are multiple paths to a low-scoring game. Skenes can dominate, Colorado can sputter, and Pittsburgh may not need to score much to comfortably win. With the moneyline and run line heavily juiced toward Pittsburgh, the Under offers the better value in this matchup as it is certainly tenable while not requiring laying extreme wood to back it.
