The best three underdogs for Week 12 of the NFL Season
There have already been a ton of upsets in the NFL during this bizarre 2020 season, and they’re not going to stop anytime soon. Things are up in the air during the 2020 campaign more than ever, which should lead to some truly wild outcomes.
There’s often value on NFL underdogs, and with that in mind today we’ll be breaking down a few of our favorite underdog picks for Week 12:
1. Los Angeles Chargers +5.5 at Buffalo Bills
The Chargers are a team that loves to blow leads, but they almost always keep games close and I love getting this many points with them. Despite being 3-7 on the year, their point differential is only -13. Buffalo on the other hand is 7-3 with a point differential of only +7, showing they’ve been getting pretty lucky this year. Justin Herbert has been incredibly consistent as a rookie, and he’s playing at an elite level.
Buffalo’s defense has quietly been mostly awful this year, and they’ve given up at least 32 points in back to back weeks now. The Chargers finally got over some of their demons with a win over New York last week, and I think that’ll put this very talented roster back on track. At worst they’ll lose a heartbreaker by a few points and still cover this spread relatively comfortably.
2. New York Jets +7 vs. Miami Dolphins
It won’t feel great, but you’ve got to back the Jets this week. Getting a touchdown at home against an overhyped Dolphins team is just too much value to pass up. Tua Tagovailoa’s honeymoon came to an end this past week, as he was so bad against the Broncos that Brian Flores benched him. I think now that defenses have started to see more film of what offensive coordinator Chan Gailey is doing with him they’ve figured it out.
Nobody’s noticed but the Jets’ offense has actually come alive recently, scoring at least 27 points in each of their past two games. If they come anywhere close to that total here, they’ll easily cover this spread. With this being a division rivalry game against a team that embarrassed them early in the year, don’t expect the Jets to just roll over here.
3. Denver Broncos +6 vs. New Orleans Saints
Speaking of Denver, they make sense as a home underdog for the second week in a row. Their defense is a lot better than most people realize, and they’ve got real talent at every level. The secondary has the potential to be great with safety Justin Simmons playing at an elite level and corners Bryce Callahan and A.J. Bouye now both back from injury. The pass-rush is still a force with Bradley Chubb there, and they sacked Tagovailoa six times last week.
Now is the time to fade the Saints in the wake of all the hype surrounding Taysom Hill’s debut under center. The Falcons had no idea what to expect with Hill last week, as nobody knew what Sean Payton’s game plan for him would be or even if he would be starting until a couple of days before the game. With a lot more time and information to prepare, Broncos coach Vic Fangio should be able to shut down Hill and send him crashing down to earth.
