Baltimore Orioles ML (-124) over Los Angeles Dodgers

The Baltimore Orioles held a 4-1 lead heading into the 6th inning of yesterday’s game against the Dodgers, but that changed in an instant with an RBI single from Will Smith followed by a grand slam off the bat of Chris Taylor. The Dodgers held on to win 6-4, but I believe the Orioles are in good shape to even up the series tonight. Tyler Wells makes the start and there’s a solid case to be made that he should have represented Baltimore in this year’s All-Star Game. Wells leads the MLB with his 0.93 WHIP and owns the 9th-best ERA in the American League at 3.18. An opposing lineup has to beat Wells because he very seldom makes enough mistakes to beat himself. Through 17 starts and 18 appearances, Wells has walked 24 batters in 104.2 innings, making him among one of the most efficient strike-throwers in the game. In addition to that, Wells has recorded quality starts in 5 of his last 6 games.

Michael Grove takes the ball for the Dodgers opposite Wells, and he’s surely hoping for a stronger second half to his season. Through 8 starts and 11 appearances, Grove holds a 6.89 ERA, 1.55 WHIP, and .302 opposing batting average. Unlike Wells, who has provided an abundance of quality starts for the Orioles, Grove has pitched a full 6.0 innings only once this season and rarely exceeds 80 pitches per start. Over his last 7 appearances, Grove has given up at least 4 earned runs on 5 occasions. The pitching matchup is too lopsided for me to side with the Dodgers tonight, even with their deep lineup. I’m backing Baltimore and Wells to even up the series.

Gunnar Henderson to record 2+ total bases (-110)

Gunnar Henderson is a bright young star at the top of this Baltimore lineup and last night he roped a ground ball into the right-field corner for an RBI triple. Henderson has a slash line of .246/.341/.466 on the year, but he slashed .320/.354/.640 in June and has recorded 2 or more total bases in 4 of his last 5 games. Most of Henderson’s power numbers are coming against right-handed pitching this season and he should see at least 2 at-bats against Michael Grove in this one. His slash line against righties is .256/.336/.525 and 28 of his 29 extra-base hits have come against right-handed pitching.

Grove is allowing opposing batters to hit .302 against him this season, and that number goes up to .345 against left-handed batters. Not only is Grove getting torched by left-handed hitters, but he’s been unable to put them away via strikeout. Against right-handed batters, Grove owns a 6.75 strikeout-to-walk ratio, but against left-handed batters it drops to 1.45. The matchup seems too good to pass up and Henderson is finally showing why he was highly regarded as one of the best prospects coming into this season. Look for Henderson to record at least 2 total bases tonight.

Mookie Betts to record 2+ hits (+160)

Tyler Wells has an MLB best 0.93 WHIP, but that also means he’s keeping pitches in the zone and limiting walks. Mookie Betts should go up against Wells at least twice in this game before the Orioles look to the bullpen and I like his chances to rack up a couple of hits. Betts owns a slash line of .285/.385/.587 and just recorded his 100th hit of the season last night, placing him 8th in the National League.

Betts has 21 multi-hit games on the season and 7 of those have come in the last 14 games. Since June 28, Betts is hitting .455 and has struck out only 5 times. Betts is seeing the ball extremely well and I’d expect him to be aggressive given how many strikes Wells throws. At +160 odds, this is the perfect prop to cap off our Same Game Parlay, bringing us to +828 parlay odds.
