This week’s Subway Series is a bit less meaningful in terms of standings and playoff implications than anticipated entering this season. Fans and media alike would not have been crazy to expect this matchup to be a heavyweight tilt between a couple of division leaders. Instead, the Yankees are last in the AL East and the Mets are 4th in the NL East and 7 games under .500. With the Yankees still mathematically very well alive in the wild card and the Mets evaluating the makeup of their team, along with a cross-town rivalry, there is still plenty to watch out for in this one.

New York Yankees ML over New York Mets (+105)

The Yankees are coming off a very badly needed sweep which snapped a 4-game losing streak. The sweep was over the Royals, so it is not like they beat up a quality team, but Kansas City presented the exact slump-buster the Yankees needed. Prior to last weekend’s sweep, the Yankees lost 7 out of their last 9 games to the Cubs, Rockies and Angels. That is a very ugly stretch that they will be thrilled to be out of.

Again, a sweep over the Royals is hardly something to brag about. But there is a good feeling in that Yankees locker room which is a tough thing to recover during a tough stretch. They get 2 games against the Mets beginning tonight, with whom they split a 2-game series last month. The Mets have lost 3 out of their last 4 and just plain cannot put things together this season. Approaching a pivotal trade deadline, the Yankees look better to take this one, especially having home advantage at what should be a raucous Yankee Stadium.

Under 8.5 (-105)

The under has hit in 4 out of the Mets’ last 5 games and their over/under record in their last 10 games is 2-7-1. The total has also gone under in 4 out of the last 5 overall head-to-head matchups between the New York teams. The pitching matchup on Tuesday gives the under more appeal for continuing those game total trends. Justin Verlander will start for the Mets and Domingo German will start for the Yankees.

Verlander enters this start in great form. Over his last 5 starts, he has allowed 6 earned runs in 31 innings pitched and has not been pulled in the middle of an inning once all season. His counterpart German is looking to bounce back from a tough start which followed 3 strong starts, including a perfect game. Both of these starting pitchers have a good chance to deal before turning it over to the bullpens.

Gleyber Torres 2+ total bases (+120)

Gleyber Torres has done his best to try to help keep the Yankees’ offense afloat with Aaron Judge out of the lineup. Torres leads the Yankees in at-bats, batting average, RBIs, runs scored, slugging percentage, OPS, hits and walks. He has bounced back from an ugly June with a very strong July. With 6 games still remaining this month, including Tuesday’s, Torres has a .325 average and a .889 OPS with 25 hits and 41 total bases this month.

Entering this game, Gleyber Torres has a 13-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 17 out of 19 games in July. During his current hit streak, he has amassed 31 total bases for an average of 2.38 total bases per game. In a game where the Yankees will face a good starting pitcher but a bad team overall, Torres is a good candidate to give a spark to his team.
