Boston Red Sox ML (-130) over New York Yankees

Things couldn’t have gone much better for the Red Sox in their 15-5 win over the Yankees last night. Every starter aside from Rafael Devers recorded a hit and they knocked Yankees starting pitcher Domingo German out of the game after just 2.0 innings of work. Tonight, we’ll get a starting pitching rematch from June 11 as Clarke Schmidt and Brayan Bello take the mound. New York jumped out to a 2-1 lead after the 2nd inning in that game, but it was all they would get, as Boston closed the series with a 3-2 win after 10 innings. Both pitchers were extremely impressive in their outings, with Schmidt allowing just 1 earned run on a solo homer across 5.1 innings, while Bello gave up 2 earned runs on 3 hits over 7.0 innings, and likely would have tossed a shutout if Jose Trevino’s 2-run, 2-out single hadn’t skipped off the 2nd-base bag.

Schmidt and Bello have traveled similar paths in a multitude of ways this season and have each come a long way since slow starts to their seasons. They both had ERAs north of 6.50 at the end of April and now have ERAs south of 3.00 since mid-May. While Schmidt has been dealing of late, Bello has shown promise and tremendous upside. After that rough start, Bello has shut down some dangerous lineups and had quality starts against the Braves, Angels, Rays, and Yankees, while allowing 2 runs or fewer in 7 of his last 8 starts. The Red Sox offense was on fire yesterday and I’d much rather that lineup and Bello than a Yankees lineup without Aaron Judge.

Justin Turner to record 2+ total bases (+100)

Justin Turner was a major contributor in last night’s victory, going 3-for-5 with 10 total bases, while tying a career-high with 6RBIs. Turner is now batting .333 for the month while slugging .614 with 15 RBIs. With the monster performance, Turner has now recorded 2+ total bases in 6 of his last 7 games, and I like his chances to make it 7 of his last 8 after tonight. Turner has always been a free swinger and over his 15-year career, he’s averaged 54 walks and 90 strikeouts over a 162-game season. This means that he consistently puts the ball in play and increases his chances of getting on base.

His 14.5% strikeout rate this season ranks in the 89th percentile and I like the matchup against Schmidt. Turner lifted a ball out to right-center for a homer against Schmidt last week at Yankee Stadium, and he’s riding a 7-game hitting streak, while striking out only twice in his last 28 at-bats. He’s clearly seeing the ball well, and Schmidt is always around the zone with his 6.5% walk rate. Turner should see some pitches to hit and I like the price we’re getting here. I’m backing Turner to remain hot.

Masataka Yoshida to record an RBI (+165)

Masataka Yoshida was the other big performer for the Red Sox yesterday, going 4-for-4 with 3 RBIs in the victory. The 4 hits were a career-high for the 29-year-old rookie out of Japan and another glimpse of how important Yoshida can be for the long-term success of the Boston franchise. Yoshida is hitting .309 on the season, which is good for 2nd place in the American League, trailing only Bo Bichette, who is hitting .317.  Batting behind Turner and Rafael Devers also provides an abundance of opportunities to bat with runners in scoring position, and Yoshida has thrived when his numbers been called. In 62 at-bats with runners in scoring position, Yoshida is hitting .323 with 29 RBIs, which both rank inside the top 21 in the AL. Yoshida should have chances to drive in some runs today and this is an excellent price to boost our parlay up above +600.
