Week 7 of the NFL season offered a thoroughly unappealing slate, with only 1 game between teams with winning records (barely) – as the 3-2 Tennessee Titans beat the 3-2-1 Indianapolis Colts in a predictably bad football game. There was some entertainment, however. A total of 76 points were mercifully scored on Thursday Night Football and Sunday Night Football between the Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers went down to the wire. The New York Giants and Jacksonville Jaguars’ outcome was in doubt until the last second and the last yard.

As for Week 8, its schedule is far more interesting. Primetime matchups include Lamar Jackson vs Tom Brady on Thursday (although the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are a disaster right now) and Aaron Rodgers vs Josh Allen on Sunday (but Rodgers’ Green Bay Packers look almost as bad as the Bucs!). We also have plenty of big division-rivalry showdowns, including the San Francisco 49ers visiting the Los Angeles Rams.

Let’s take a look at the early lines and some potential best bets to be made.

Best early bets for NFL Week 8

Baltimore Ravens -1 (-110) over Tampa Bay Buccaneers

A 2-game losing streak – and the second one of the season – is bad enough regardless of the opposition for a team that had such high expectations going into the year. When it comes at the hands of the Steelers and Panthers, it’s even worse. To say that the Bucs are reeling right now would be a gross understatement. The Ravens rarely blow teams out, but when you are giving only 1 point that isn’t a problem. A late Justin Tucker field goal might get the job done, and there is a good chance the visitors will wrap this up before even requiring any Tucker heroics.

Miami Dolphins -3 (-110) over Detroit Lions

The Dolphins are 4-0 when Tua Tagovailoa plays a full game under center after he returned from his concussion and they scraped past the Steelers on Sunday night. It wasn’t a spectacular performance, but Miami should be able to get by even with another underwhelming effort in Week 8 considering the competition level remains low. The Lions have lost 4 straight games and their offense that once led the league has scored a total of 6 points in the last 2 weeks.

Washington Commanders +4 (-110) over Indianapolis Colts

Five of the Colts’ 7 games have been decided by a single possession. Four of the Commanders’ seven have been margins of no more than 6 points – including 3 in a row by 5 points or fewer. Both of these teams play close games more often than not and neither has a good offense that is needed to pull away from opponents. Washington is riding a 2-game winning streak and may be able to extend that to 3 with an outright win. At the very least the visitors should cover.
