Good morning, Pickswise Nation, and welcome to a busy Tuesday of sports. We have a massive day in Major League Baseball to look forward to, plus the “start” of the NHL season (on US soil, anyway!). Let’s get straight to making your next bet better!

About Last Night

Chiefs survive on Monday Night Football
Monday Night Football hasn’t been all that compelling this season, but things did take a turn for the better with Monday’s 30-29 Chiefs victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. The game was highlighted by controversy between questionable roughing-the-passer calls and a holding penalty on a missed field goal, among others. Ultimately it was Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs who escaped with a 1-point win, likely saving many bettors’ teasers in the process. Kansas City will host the Buffalo Bills in Week 6.

Today’s Slate

MLB playoffs resume
After an eventful Wild Card Weekend, the MLB playoffs return on Tuesday with a foursome of games. The ALDS features Yankees vs Guardians and Astros vs Mariners, while the NLDS sees the Dodgers take on the Padres and Braves play the Phillies. You can read our MLB picks for every playoff game.

NHL drops the puck on 2022-23 season
The 2022-23 NHL season gets underway stateside with a doubleheader on Tuesday. First up is the New York Rangers against the Tampa Bay Lightning in a rematch of last season’s Eastern Conference Finals. This will be followed by a trip out west for a showdown between Vegas Golden Knights and Los Angeles Kings. Be sure to read today’s NHL predictions.

Best Bet of the Day

MLB: Houston Astros -1.5 over Seattle Mariners
3:37 pm ET

The Mariners shocked the Blue Jays with a 2-game sweep in Toronto during the Wild Card series behind excellent pitching in Game 1 and a lot of luck in Game 2. However, the Blue Jays were not a complete team, which isn’t a problem for the Astros. And to no surprise, future 2022 AL Cy Young winner Justin Verlander will start Game 1 for the Astros. It was a historic regular season for Verlander, who posted a 1.75 ERA paired with a 2.66 xERA in 175 innings. Seattle is no stranger to Verlander as their AL West rivalry had Verlander starting 6 games against the Mariners in the regular season, and he posted a 5-1 record with a 2.34 ERA. Check out our full Mariners vs Astros predictions.
