Bengals vs Packers Guest Expert Predictions

Point Spread Pick
CIN Bengals +14.0(-110)

The biggest news to come out this week in the NFL was Cleveland trading veteran QB Joe Flacco to Cincinnati. The Bengals have been an absolute train wreck since Joe Burrow got hurt in the Week 2 comeback victory over Jacksonville.

Cincinnati has been outscored, 113-37 in the past three losses to Minnesota, Denver, and Detroit. The Bengals actually scored 24 points in last Sunday’s home defeat to the Lions, although 21 of those points came in the fourth quarter.

Green Bay is back from the bye week following a 40-40 tie at Dallas in Week 4. The Packers led 13-0 before the Cowboys rallied back to lead at halftime. Green Bay avoided the loss by kicking a last-second field goal in overtime to move to 2-1-1 on the season.

The 40-point output at Dallas was a significant improvement for the Pack, who was held to 10 points the prior week in an upset loss at Cleveland to Flacco and the Browns. QB Jordan Love threw for a season-high 337 yards and 3 TDs against the Cowboys, marking his first 300+ yard passing performance since Week 2 against Minnesota last season.

Flacco has the benefit of throwing to WRs Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins as the former LSU star ranks 10th in the NFL in receiving yards with 374 through five games.

The pointspread against Cincinnati keeps increasing every week. In Jake Browning’s first start in place of Burrow at Minnesota in Week 3, the Bengals closed as 3-point underdogs in an embarrassing 48-10 defeat. That number moved up to 7.5 in Week 4 at Denver, falling to the Broncos, 28-3. Detroit covered as 10.5-point road favorites last Sunday, leading 28-3 before hanging on for the 37-24 victory.

In the last two games as a favorite of 6.5 points or more, the Packers failed to cover. Green Bay has ballooned to a 14-point favorite on Sunday, as Matt LaFleur’s team posted a 1-1 record against the spread as a double-digit favorite in 2024.

Even though Flacco is crash landing into Cincinnati and will immediately start, let’s take a shot with the Bengals to get a reset and cover the spread.

Game Totals Pick

Cincinnati easily cashed the Under in the season opener at Cleveland in a 17-16 victory on a 47.5 total. The Bengals have been torched defensively in the last four games, allowing an average of 35 points.

In this four-game span, Cincinnati is 3-1 to the Over, as the Bengals take on a Packers’ club that put up 40 points at Dallas in a tie two weeks ago.

Green Bay has topped the 27-point mark in three of four games this season. The Browns held the Packers to 10 points in a Week 3 victory, but playing at home has been a different story from a scoring standpoint for Green Bay.

Dating back to last season, the Pack has scored at least 24 points in 8 of the past 10 games at Lambeau Field. In two home games this season, Green Bay tallied 27 points apiece against Detroit and Washington in the first two weeks.

The Packers rank 4th in the NFL in yards allowed per game at 283.3 and 2nd in rushing yards allowed at 77.5. Cincinnati is the worst rushing team in the league, so they will have to depend on newly-acquired Joe Flacco to get the passing game going.

Sunday’s total sits at 44.5, which is the second-lowest total for Green Bay this season. Flacco has more offensive weapons to work with in Cincinnati, but doesn’t have the luxury of the Cleveland defense to fall back on.

I believe the Pack will get its points and the Bengals can find a way to get three scores to push this game Over the total.
