Browns vs Patriots Pickswise Expert Predictions

Cleveland Browns
Point Spread Pick
CLE Browns +7.0(-115)

The New England Patriots will be trying to extend their winning streak to 5 games when they host the Cleveland Browns in Week 8 of the NFL season on Sunday afternoon. New England is a stellar 5-2 overall so far this year, but keep in mind that 4 of its victories have come by 6 points or fewer — that includes against the Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints. Another close one could be in the cards for this weekend, so my Browns vs Patriots pick is on the visitors to cover. New England could be very 1-dimensional on Sunday, because it is #22 league wide in rushing offense (103.4 yards per game) and Cleveland is incredible against the run (#4 at 82.4 ypg and #1 in yards per attempt at 3.3). It’s also worth noting that WR Stefon Diggs is questionable, while 3 defensive starters are also questionable.

Cleveland is inconsistent at best, but the good version of this team certainly showed up last weekend. Although a win over Miami Dolphins is nothing special, beating anyone in the NFL 31-6 is at least somewhat noteworthy. Quarterback Dillon Gabriel has not thrown a single interception through 4 starts since the trade of Joe Flacco to the Cincinnati Bengals. Gabriel is never going to be anything more than a game manager, but at least he isn’t making mistakes — and that’s all the Browns are asking of him. When you are backed by a superb defense, you don’t have to be a superhero under center. Head coach Kevin Stefanski’s club has lost by more than 4 points just 3 times through 7 outings. It is not with a boatload of confidence, but I think the Browns can keep another one close on Sunday.

New England Patriots
Cleveland Browns
Game Totals Pick
Over 40.5(-105)

Cleveland is giving up 6.7 yards per pass attempt, which is in the middle of the pack in the NFL. It has also surrendered 12 touchdowns through the air, which is worse than average. The Browns’ 18 sacks surprisingly do not have them anywhere near the top of the charts in that department, either. There is no denying that Cleveland’s defense is very good, but I think New England QB Drake Maye can have some success this weekend. Maye has been impressive so far in year 2, completing 75.2 percent of his passes for 1,744 yards with 12 touchdowns and just 2 interceptions. He has also rushed for 200 yards and 2 scores. That is big reason why my Browns vs Patriots pick is Over 40.5.

On the other side of the ball, the Pats could have their hands full with Browns running back Quinshon Judkins — who is taking a lot of pressure off Gabriel. Judkins, a second-round pick out of Ohio State this spring, has made an instant impact. He has parlayed 109 carries into 467 yards and 5 touchdowns. Judkins has gained at least 84 yards in 4 of the last 5 contests, including 110 against the Minnesota Vikings. It should also be noted that New England is poor against the pass, ranking third-to-last at 8.0 yards per attempt allowed. The Browns could find success both on the ground and through the air this weekend.

Cleveland Browns vs New England Patriots prediction: Over 40.5 (-105) available at time of publishing. Playable at that number.
