Texans vs Ravens Pickswise Expert Predictions

Houston Texans
Point Spread Pick
HOU Texans -1.5(-110)

This is a game with a ton of uncertainty at play, and it’s hard to truly gauge how to find value in a game where there are so many injuries, particularly for one team. After all, we just saw the 49ers go into Los Angeles and play an excellent game against the Rams, where San Francisco overcame a litany of injuries on both sides of the ball to win a game as significant underdogs against a much healthier opponent. This game is a bit different because despite the fact that the Ravens have what feels like half of their roster on the Friday injury report, Houston is only a very slight favorite in Sunday’s matchup, so I’ll lean toward backing the Texans in this AFC clash.

The big news surrounding this game is that Lamar Jackson will be out with a hamstring injury, leaving Cooper Rush to start in his place. While Rush is a somewhat serviceable backup quarterback, this is not exactly the type of offensive scheme that puts him in a place to succeed. After all, Rush is essentially an immobile quarterback, which is pretty much the opposite of what you’re getting with Jackson. Even longtime Ravens backup Tyler Huntley had proven to be more than serviceable in this offense during instances where Jackson went down with an injury in recent seasons and Baltimore needed its backup quarterback to pick up the slack. This time around, Rush shouldn’t be counted on to do that, and he’ll be going up against a Texans defense that is one of the best units in the sport at the moment. Baltimore’s defense will also be missing Roquan Smith, Kyle Van Noy and Marlon Humphrey, among many others. This feels like an opportunity for Houston on the road, but I’ll tread lightly before backing CJ Stroud and this struggling Texans offense.

Game Totals Pick
Under 40.5(-110)

Given the injury uncertainty for the Ravens offense, it’s reasonable to assume that Baltimore struggles mightily against the stout Texans defense, even at home. Cooper Rush can’t be trusted to put up plenty of points, especially in an offense that is not particularly built for his skillset. Baltimore is likely to slow things down and keep the offense pretty vanilla, which should keep the clock moving and shorten the game as a result. On the other side, Houston’s offense has been in a rut all season long, and I can’t expect the Texans to suddenly figure things out in a game where possessions could be quite limited. Let’s take the under at M&T Bank Stadium.

Under 40.5 available at time of publishing. Playable to 40.
