Chargers vs Dolphins Guest Expert Predictions

Point Spread Pick
MIA Dolphins +4.5(-110)

It seems like a long time ago that the Chargers were cruising along at 3-0. After back-to-back losses to the Giants and Commanders, Los Angeles is tied atop the AFC West with Denver as the Chargers head to Miami to face the struggling Dolphins.

Jim Harbaugh’s team rolled through its division foes in beating the Chiefs, Raiders, and Broncos in the first three weeks. The good news with the last two losses is it came against NFC teams, so it doesn’t hurt L.A.’s AFC record.

The Dolphins can’t get out of their own way at 1-4, blowing a 17-0 lead in Sunday’s 27-24 defeat at Carolina. Following an 0-3 start and a Monday night victory over the rival Jets, Miami could have rebuilt its season at 2-3, but the meltdown against the Panthers have likely sunk their chances.

The storyline with these two teams will concentrate on the QBs from the 2020 draft. Justin Herbert ranks 8th in passing yards in the NFL, but the Chargers’ signal-caller sits 21st in YPA and 20th in completion percentage. The player picked ahead of Herbert, Tua Tagovailoa is 8th in completion percentage and 3rd in passing TDs with 10.

The Tua/Herbert comparison is alive and well with the way things are going involving these teams. Herbert and the Chargers seek their second road victory after winning at Las Vegas in Week 2, but the Lightning Bolts were tripped up by the Giants in Week 4. Last season, the Chargers went 6-3 in the regular season on the road, but finished with a loss at Houston in the playoffs.

In their last head-to-head matchup to kick off the 2023 season, the Dolphins outlasted the Chargers, 36-34 as 3-point road underdogs. Tua threw for 466 yards, but 215 of those went to Tyreek Hill, who is currently sidelined for the rest of the season with a leg injury.

The Chargers are down several running backs as Najee Harris is out with a torn Achilles and rookie standout Omarion Hampton is sidelined for four weeks with an ankle injury.

Game Totals Pick
Under 43.5(-110)

Something will have to give from a total standpoint as these teams are going in different directions. Miami is 4-1 to the Over this season, while Los Angeles has hit the Under in four of five games.

The Dolphins were held to 8 points in the opening loss at Indianapolis, but Miami has averaged 24.7 points per game in the last four weeks. In all four of those games, the Dolphins cashed the Over, while allowing at least 21 points each time. Miami has not limited an opponent to less than 20 points this season, while yielding 239 rushing yards to Carolina last Sunday.

The Panthers were without top running back Chuba Hubbard and still ran all over the Dolphins. The Chargers are without both Najee Harris and Omarion Hampton, as the Dolphins look to fix their rushing defense that ranks last in the NFL.

Los Angeles didn’t give up more than 21 points in any of its first four games before allowing 27 points in last Sunday’s loss to Washington. The Commanders overcame an early 10-0 deficit to outscore the Chargers, 27-0 over the final three quarters in a 27-10 rout. Justin Herbert threw for at least 240 yards in each of the first three victories, but has been held to 203 yards against the Giants and 166 yards against the Commanders.

Patrick Mahomes put up the top passing game against the Chargers’ defense with 258 yards in the opener in Brazil. In the last four games, L.A. has limited three teams to fewer than 200 passing yards.

Tua Tagovailoa hasn’t thrown an interception in the last two games for Miami, while posting at least 2 TD passes in each of the past four contests.

The trend of the Dolphins’ Unders will likely continue as opposed to another high-scoring game for the Chargers.

Chargers vs Dolphins pick: Under 43.5 (-110) available at time of publishing. Playable to 43.
