Steelers vs Jets Pickswise Expert Predictions

Pittsburgh Steelers
Point Spread Pick
NY Jets +3.0(-120)

You know that even some normal Sunday afternoon matchups are not entirely random when you see that the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Jets are squaring off in Week 1 of the 2025 regular season. Yes, the schedule makers showcase a sense of humor every now and then. This showdown, of course, is headlined by Aaron Rodgers’ return to New York as quarterback of the Steelers. Of course, don’t confuse this with some kind of legend returning to his old stomping grounds. Rodgers infamously tore his Achilles’ on his first drive as a Jet in 2023 and he wasn’t very good last season. At 41 years old, there is no reason to think there will be a return to the glory days when he dons the black and gold for the first time. That is one of the reasons why my Steelers vs Jets prediction is on the home side to cover a +3 spread.

As implied above, I have zero faith in Rodgers and the Steelers. This franchise always seems to avoid a losing record under head coach Mike Tomlin, but the streak could end this season. If it continues, it almost certainly won’t be with a lot of room to spare. Now, it is also true that the Jets are nothing special. They went 5-12 in 2024 and have not won more than 7 games since 2015. I feel decent about Justin Fields being under center in New York. He was productive in limited work for none other than the Steelers last season and has the potential to be a legitimate starting QB in this league. RB Breece Hall and WR Garrett Wilson are nice weapons with which Fields can work. On the other side of the ball, Sauce Gardner should help shut down Pittsburgh’s air attack. In what projects to be a low-scoring affair, 3 points should be enough for the Jets.

New York Jets
Pittsburgh Steelers
Game Totals Pick
Under 38.5(-115)

Unsurprisingly, this is the lowest total of the week. But 38.5 may not be low enough. My Steelers vs Jets pick is on the Under, although admittedly it is not with a ton of confidence given that it’s in the 30s. Still, it’s just hard to back the over in a game involving both the Steelers and the Jets.

Pittsburgh’s offense has zero familiarity with Rodgers or with new receiver D.K. Metcalf. On the bright side for the visitors, a stout defense is still led by star edge rusher T.J. Watt. It’s a similar story in New York, where defense runs the show. Fields has potential, but he is still largely unproven. Fortunately for the Jets, Fields and company may not have to put up a lot of points to win this season opener. Gardner, Quinnen Williams and the rest of the defense should have the upper hand when that unit is on the field. And even when scoring drives do develop, they will probably be run-heavy slogs that chew up plenty of clock.

Steelers vs Jets prediction: Under 38.5 (-115) available at time of publishing. Playable at that number.
