The Tennessee Titans finally have some momentum following their first victory of the season as they head into a Week 6 road date with the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday afternoon. Tennessee had been 0-4 before staging an improbable fourth-quarter comeback to prevail at Arizona 22-21. The Titans now know that they can win on the road, and a matchup with a lowly Las Vegas squad is certainly no exception. My Titans vs Raiders pick is on the visitors to cover a +4.5 spread.

There is no denying that Tennessee is not very good, but any rebuilding process starts with the quarterback position,, and #1 overall pick Cam Ward is showing some early signs of promise. His numbers aren’t great, but the way he led his team back from a 21-6 deficit in the last 11 minutes of the game against the Cardinals was impressive.

This pick has a lot more to do, of course, with the Raiders. They are 1-4 and head into this matchup on a 4-game losing streak. Head coach Pete Carroll’s crew has been competitive at times, but it got humiliated 40-6 by Indianapolis this past weekend. Sure the Colts are off to a solid 4-1 start, but they should not be beating anyone by 34 points…unless that opponent is really, really bad. Tight end Brock Bowers may be Las Vegas’ best player, but the second-year standout from Georgia has not practiced this week and is listed as questionable. He missed the blowout loss to the Colts and seems to be trending toward a second straight game in street clothes. What is especially alarming for the Raiders is that quarterback Geno Smith has 3 more interceptions than touchdown passes (9 to 6).

Neither offense can be trusted, so my Titans vs Raiders pick is Under 41.5. When your quarterback has 3 more interceptions than touchdowns, it’s a serious problem. Throw in the fact that Bowers has a knee injury and is probably trending toward not playing, and things are not looking good for Smith. The QB’s 2 most recent performances were especially bad; he was picked off a combined 5 times in losses to Chicago and Indianapolis, the latter of which saw Las Vegas score a grand total of 6 points. On the other side of the ball, the Raiders’ defense is nowhere near as bad as the 40 points scored by Indy suggest. The Colts gained a modest 317 yards of total offense and 3 of their touchdown drives covered 6, 8 and 44 yards.

As long as the Raiders’ defense doesn’t put the defense in horrible spots like it did last weekend, it should be able to limit the Titans. Despite the occasional electric play, Ward also has more interceptions (3) than touchdowns (2). The Miami product has completed a dreadful 51.6 percent of his passes, and even during the comeback against Arizona, he threw the ball all over the field with reckless abandon, just asking for the Cardinals to pick it off — which they obviously didn’t. On the other side of the ball, Tennessee has done well to force 8 turnovers. That bodes well for the visitors’ chances of victimizing an error-prone Raiders offense. This feels like it’s going to be an ugly, low-scoring game.
