Diamondbacks vs Rockies Pickswise Expert Predictions

Game Totals Pick
Over 11.5(+100)

I understand that Eduardo Rodriguez is off to a blistering start. A 4-0 record paired with a 2.25 ERA certainly jumps off the page. But if there is one place in baseball where pristine pitching numbers can get demolished in a hurry, it is Coors Field, the most offensively volatile environment in the sport. And that is exactly what makes this over attractive. Even at 11.5 runs being the threshold.

Rodriguez may be pitching well overall, but the underlying metrics strongly suggest regression is looming. His xERA sits roughly 2.25 runs higher than his actual ERA, while his .227 BABIP indicates he has benefited from a tremendous amount of favorable variance. Add in the fact that Rodriguez is not an elite strikeout artist, and suddenly this becomes a dangerous setting for him. At Coors, a routine fly ball can leave the yard quickly, especially if traffic develops on the bases. That’s the key point: we are not backing the Colorado Rockies outright, we are backing the volatility of the environment. And on the other side, things become even shakier.

Colorado counters with Tomoyuki Sugano, whose profile is arguably more concerning. While his 3-3 record and 4.07 ERA appear respectable on the surface, the advanced metrics paint a much darker picture. Sugano carries a 6.65 xERA and a 5.61 FIP, both screaming regression. Like Rodriguez, he also owns a low BABIP that suggests his run prevention has been aided heavily by variance rather than dominance. Unlike Rodriguez, however, Sugano misses even fewer bats. That combination is dangerous against the Arizona Diamondbacks, a lineup capable of generating crooked numbers quickly. If both starters begin regressing in the most hitter-friendly ballpark in baseball, this Over can be within striking distance well before the bullpens even enter the picture, and both bullpens are pedestrian, at best. There are too many pathways for offense to take over. Thus, I am encouraging a play on the Over at even money.
