Braves vs Dodgers Pickswise Expert Predictions

Money Line Pick
ATL Braves Win(+116)

Following a 3-1 loss with Chris Sale on the mound Friday, the Atlanta Braves bounced back Saturday in a convincing 7-2 win over Blake Snell and the Los Angeles Dodgers. In his first appearance of the season, Snell surrendered 6 hits, 4 earned runs and 2 walks in 3 innings of work, though he did strike out 5. Meanwhile, Spencer Strider was excellent for Atlanta in just his 2nd start of the year, posting 6 innings of 1-hit, scoreless ball with 8 strikeouts and just 2 walks.

Sunday’s rubbermatch provides an intriguing matchup between Bryce Elder (2.02 ERA, 1.02 WHIP) and Justin Wrobleski (1.25 ERA, 1.00 WHIP). Both pitchers have been excellent thus far, but advanced metrics suggest Elder’s success is more sustainable than his counterpart’s. For reference, Elder’s xERA is under 3.00, while his xFIP and SIERA are under 4.00. Further, he has an elite 3.8% barrel rate with an above-average swinging-strike rate. Compare those marks to Wrobleski’s 4.22 xERA, 5.15 xFIP, 5.39 SIERA and below average swinging-strike rate, and you can see Wrobleski is the more likely pitcher to regress.

Sure, Wrobleski is very good at inducing ground balls, but at some point, relying on contact will come back to bite him – especially against elite offenses like Atlanta. A 15:10 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 36 innings is a profile of a pitcher that could struggle to get out of jams with traffic on the bases. It hasn’t happened yet given his 86.5% left-on-base percentage, but that is an unsustainable mark. For what it’s worth, the Braves lead the MLB with a .287 average and are 2nd in slugging at .465 with runners on base, making them a perfect opponent to pick on Wrobleski.
