Our approach to today’s NHL player props is one we’ve taken just twice this season — targeting a pair of teammates. In fact, the first time we did this, it was with the same team, which is the New Jersey Devils. Given how well they’ve done this season, it’s no surprise as to why. We have a small Sunday slate, so this looks to be the best way to attack it. The Devils have an advantageous matchup, so let’s explain why we’re targeting these skaters.

Nico Hischier over 0.5 assists (+105)

We’re dealing with Devils this Sunday. They’re coming off a tough shootout loss to the Vegas Golden Knights, but out-shot them 49-27. In fact, the skaters we’re targeting each had 6 shots on goal in that matchup. We’re featuring Nico Hischier, as just about everyone knows what Jack Hughes is capable of at this point. Some more savvy fans may be wondering why we’re targeting Hischier’s assist prop after mentioning he had 6 shots on goal. Well, he had an assist against the Coyotes earlier this season and 3 in the game against Arizona prior to that.

The Devils may even have the newly acquired Timo Meier on the ice, who is a sniper in his own right. Still, Hischier is a center, just like Hughes. However, that doesn’t mean they’re never on the ice together and remember, he doesn’t have to link up with Hughes for this play to hit. Linemate Dawson Mercer has been incredible and had 10 shots on goal in the Devils’ most recent game. On top of all that, Hischier and Hughes will be on the ice together during power plays. Let’s use that fact to transition into our second play.

Jack Hughes over 0.5 goals (+100)

Jack Hughes is the leader of the Devils’ power-play unit, which should feast on the weak Coyotes tonight. Not only has Arizona committed the 4th-most penalties this season, but they also have the 5th-worst net penalty kill percentage. As you may have guessed, Hughes had a goal against the ‘Yotes when they met earlier this season. He even had a goal and 3 points overall against them in one of the first games of his career. The 21-year-old already looks like a seasoned veteran, and his 75 points are the 10th-most in the NHL.

Of the 75, 36 have been goals, so his first career 40-goal season is soon to come. He has a great chance to inch closer to that feat given that Arizona has also allowed the 6th-most goals over the past month. In that time, the Devils have scored the 3rd-most. Prior to that game against Vegas, they scored 7 goals in back-to-back games. Arizona just got smashed 6-1 by the Carolina Hurricanes, who lead the Devils by just 2 points in the Metro Division. Therefore, we expect a similar outcome tonight and Hughes to be a primary reason why.
