NFL Draft Guide: Where is the 2020 NFL Draft?

The 2020 NFL Draft will be taking place… from a living room near you.

Thanks to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the NFL has canceled the public event that was planned in Las Vegas, Nevada. Instead, the league will be holding a virtual draft.

This means that instead of being in a war room, organizations will be conducting business from their own homes. As NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reported, the NFL has installed cameras in the homes of every GM and coach. This footage isn’t only intended for TV; the league is also using it to monitor “compliance.”

The draft will still be aired on ABC, ESPN, and NFL Network between April 23rd and April 25th. Commissioner Roger Goodell will be announcing picks from his house in Westchester, New York. Organizations will submit their selections via Microsoft Teams, and there will be a separate phone line for trades.

It wasn’t too long ago that the 2020 NFL Draft was expected to be a grand, Las Vegas-style event. For instance, players were going to be transported via boat to a unique “red carpet” floating stage in Bellagio’s fountain. The main stage was expected to be at the nearby Caesars Palace convention center. With the city preparing for the arrival of the Raiders, Las Vegas was expected to go all out during draft week.

From 1965 to 2014, the NFL Draft was held in New York City. Madison Square Garden hosted the event for more than a decade, and the draft was held at Radio City Music Hall from 2006 to 2014.

Since then, the NFL draft has been hosted in a variety of cities, with locations determined via a bidding process:

2015: Chicago
2016: Chicago
2017: Philadelphia
2018: Dallas
2019: Nashville

Cleveland will be hosting the 2021 NFL Draft, and Kansas City will be the host city in 2023. The 2022 location has yet to be determined, with both Green Bay and New England mentioned as potential hosts. Following the decision to cancel the public portion of the 2020 NFL Draft, Las Vegas was mentioned as another suitor for that 2022 spot.
