XFL Week 3 parlay picks at mega (+824) odds: Roughnecks run away with a win

Houston Roughnecks defensive back Ajene Harris (3) celebrates his interception against the Arlington Renegades in the first quarter at TDECU Stadium.

Welcome to Week 3 of the XFL season. While the league has not yet seen the ratings or engagement it was hoping for, there is still an opportunity to make a profit while watching football. The first game of the weekend is on Saturday night as the Seattle Sea Dragons take on the Vegas Vipers, and then the other 3 games — which are all featured in this mega parlay — are on Sunday.

Along with our XFL Week 3 predictions, here’s my mega parlay that pays out at over 8/1 odds at Bet365 Sportsbook.

DC Defenders -2.5 (+100)

Renegades -10 (+110)

Roughnecks -7 (+120)

Parlay odds: +824

DC Defenders -2.5 (+100) over St. Louis BattleHawks

It’s a battle of the undefeated on Sunday between the Defenders and BattleHawks. Both teams enter Week 3 with a perfect 2-0 record, but neither has had the same journey to this point. The BattleHawks had a terrible start to the season in Week 1, as they went down quickly to the Brahmas and it appeared that St. Louis was going to finish with just 3 points. But with a minute and a half left, the BattleHawks took advantage of the new XFL rules and came back from down 15-3 to win 18-3. QB A.J. McCarron turned back the clock and looked like he was back at Alabama during the comeback. Then in Week 2 they went down 12-0 to the Sea Dragons, and — you guessed it — they did it again.

While the BattleHawks are being nicknamed the comeback kings, the Defenders are being called the best team in the league. DC beat Seattle by 4 points in Week 1 and then held Vegas to just 6 points in their 12-point win in Week 2. Their run game that has earned praise as they have totaled 313 rushing yards through the first 2 weeks, which is 114 yards more than the second most (keep in mind the Vipers have 115 total). DC has 3 of the top 5 rushers in the league with Abram Smith, Ryquell Armstead and Jordan Ta’amu. The dual-threat ability of Ta’amu has caused chaos on opposing defenses, and while the BattleHawks have been a great story so far, they are heavily outmatched against the Defenders.

Arlington Renegades -10 (+110) over Orlando Guardians

The Guardians were expected to be the worst team in the XFL this season, and they have reached those expectations by Week 3. They come into this matchup with an 0-2 record and a -39 point differential. Heading into Week 3, don’t expect anything different. Coach Buckley completely threw the team under the bus during last week’s loss when a reporter asked what they had to do differently, he responded with, “We gotta get different guys.” That’s not exactly a coach I’d want to play for! If that wasn’t bad enough, backup quarterback Quinten Dormady was released on Friday for giving the Guardians’ playbook to opposing teams. What is going on in Orlando?

It’s hard to blame Coach Buckley for his frustrations considering they have the worst QB in the league and an offense that won’t block for their quarterback. Quarterback Paxton Lynch has been abysmal for Orlando this season, throwing for 204 yards with a 58% completion rate through the first 2 weeks. When they put backup Deondre Francois in, he went 6-of-13 for 8 yards with an interception. To beat the Guardians you don’t have to be great, just good enough. That should be easily attainable for Drew Plitt and the Renegades, who are coming off a 23-14 loss to the Roughnecks. Houston has one of the best defenses in the league, so going from the Roughnecks to the Guardians will essentially be going from the best to the worst. Expect Sal Cannella to shred through the Orlando secondary and for the Renegades to cover the XFL’s biggest spread and more.

Houston Roughnecks -7 (+120) over San Antonio Brahmas

Coach Wade Phillips has taken his 28 years as an NFL defensive coordinator and created the best defense in the XFL. Houston has 12 sacks and 17 tackles for a loss entering Week 3, which is by far the most in the league. The Roughnecks have surrendered just 26 points this season, as they began their year with an easy 33-12 win over the Guardians and then a 23-14 win over the Renegades last week. Their elite defense is going to make life miserable for Jack Coan, who is just 24 years old and still getting used to professional football.

One of the biggest surprises in the XFL this season has been Brandon Silvers. The former Troy Trojans quarterback has been exceptional for the Roughnecks through the first 2 weeks and he’s 2nd in the XFL for passing yards. The Roughnecks’ quarterback has thrown for 445 yards and a league-leading 4 touchdowns, so even though their defense has been the talk of the league, he’s made the Roughnecks offense an above-average unit. As for the Brahmas, there is too small of a sample size to determine if they are legit or not. They beat up on a terrible Guardians team last week, but I’m not completely sold on Coan just yet. I’ll take the Roughnecks for another comfortable win and move to 3-0.
