New York Yankees vs New York Mets Prediction, Odds and Picks for Today, 05/17/26

I initially saw Ryan Weathers listed as the starter for the Yankees on Sunday and was excited to back a talented left-handed pitcher against the Mets. Instead, Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz is the scheduled starter for the Yankees to close out the weekend series. Elmer has made 2 career MLB starts, both this season against the Texas Rangers. His first matchup with Texas resulted in 4 innings with 2 earned runs allowed due to 4 walks. In the 2nd meeting, he walked 4 more batters while allowing 3 earned runs across 4.2 innings. I’m sure he will be happy to see a different lineup this time around. In the minors, Elmer showcased solid strikeout upside, and the Yankees are very fond of his potential.

The Mets enter Sunday ranking dead last in wOBA against right-handed pitching. The Yankees bullpen also has essentially everyone available for Sunday’s game.

The Mets have their ace on the hill with Freddy Peralta set to make his 10th start of the season. Peralta has a 3.10 ERA through 49.1 innings of work, and his 3.55 xERA and 3.66 FIP are also solid marks. Peralta is still missing barrels and producing as a solid piece to a rotation, but his strikeout rate has taken a noticeable dip this season. His matchup against the Yankees is obviously a tough one with New York sitting 6th in wOBA against right-handed pitching. They also see the 4th-most pitches per plate appearance as a lineup, and I expect them to work long counts against Peralta in this matchup. At current pricing, it is hard for me not to side with the Yankees in Sunday’s game.
