Seven-times CONCACAF Gold Cup champions USA squeezed through to the semifinals with a penalty shootout success over Canada on Sunday, but they have not been entirely convincing in this tournament and are far from certain to defeat Panama inside 90 minutes in Wednesday’s first semifinal at the Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego. The Stars & Stripes are attempting to win the tournament without several first-choice players and their limitations were exposed from the start of the group stage when they needed an 88th-minute Brandon Vazquez goal to earn a 1-1 against Jamaica. The USA were equally unconvincing in the quarterfinal match against Canada, who led 2-1 in extra-time until Scott Kennedy’s dramatic 114th-minute own goal led to the USA winning on penalty kicks.
Panama won Group C and continued its impressive progress with a 4-0 quarterfinal success against Qatar. Taking the Panama or Tie double chance option cashes if the underdogs win the game or even just force the USA to go into extra-time again. Panama has not reached the final of this competition since 2013 but should prove to be no pushover.
