Pittsburgh Steelers vs Philadelphia Eagles predictions, odds, spreads & betting lines: Steelers show their mettle

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett (8) throws a pass against the Miami Dolphins during the second half at Hard Rock Stadium.

We’ve got a Battle of Pennsylvania this weekend as the Steelers head to Lincoln Financial Field to take on the Eagles. Both teams are having very contrasting seasons — Pittsburgh is 2-5 and Philadelphia is 6-0. But none of that will matter when these teams step onto the field. Can the Steelers at least secure bragging rights against their state rivals — and hand them their first loss off the season — or will the Eagles move to 7-0 and further enhance their status as a Super Bowl contender? Our NFL expert has picks, predictions and best bets for this matchup, so let’s break it all down.

NFL Week 8 Pittsburgh Steelers vs Philadelphia Eagles prediction

The Eagles have consistently been getting it done and teams just don’t seem to have an answer to Jalen Hurts and his receiving tandem of DeVonta Smith and AJ Brown. They will no doubt be motivated to keep things going and certainly won’t want to suffer their first loss to the Steelers of all teams. However, Pittsburgh boasts a vicious defense that could cause problems for Nick Sirianni’s team.

Pittsburgh Steelers vs Philadelphia Eagles expert picks

We’ve got 2 standout NFL picks for this week’s clash between the Steelers and Eagles.

Steelers vs Eagles point spread pick: Steelers +10.5 (-105)

It’s the battle for Pennsylvania here as the Philadelphia Eagles host the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Eagles are the NFL’s last unbeaten team, and they look like the team to beat in the NFC, while the Steelers appear headed for a disappointing campaign. That being said, I’m taking the points with the underdog. Getting double digits is just too good to pass up. The last time Mike Tomlin was getting double digits was just two weeks ago when Pittsburgh played the Bucs, and they ended up winning that one outright. The Steelers always seem to play best when they’re counted out, and I don’t think this Eagles team is nearly as good as their record indicates. Their most recent victory was at home against Cooper Rush, and their win before that was pretty uninspiring in a three-point game against the Cardinals.

They didn’t beat Rush by double digits even though he gifted them three interceptions, so I can’t count on them to win by multiple touchdowns here. Kenny Pickett should only continue to get better as he gets more reps, and he’s faced a tough schedule in his first few NFL appearances. The Eagles are getting all this hype, but I don’t think they’ve been that dominant, and I still have big questions about their offense. The Steelers are starting to get a little healthier, and I think Pickett is better than his numbers suggest. He struggled with Miami’s blitz-heavy scheme last week, but that’s quite understandable for a rookie on the road in a primetime game. I think he’ll show much better here.

Steelers vs Eagles Over/Under totals pick: Under 43.5 (-110)

I don’t see too many points being scored here. Pittsburgh’s defense looks a lot better than it did early in the season, but their offense has only scored more than 20 points once this season, and that was in an overtime game. Even then they only got to 23. They don’t run the ball very efficiently, but they still like to run it, as Najee Harris got 17 carries last week in a game where Pittsburgh trailed for most of the night. The Steelers were able to hold the Dolphins’ elite weapons mostly in check, and they limited Miami to only 16 points in Tua Tagovailoa’s return.

Philly has been winning games mostly thanks to their stellar defense, and they’ve given up 17 points or fewer in four of their past five. Jacksonville is the only team to put up more than 17 on them recently, and even they only scored 21. I’ve been impressed with Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon, and he doesn’t exactly have a nightmare matchup here at home against an anemic Steelers offense with a rookie quarterback.
