All eyes will be on the matchup out West tonight as the Dallas Mavericks try to halt their losing streak against a Phoenix Suns team that has won 4 in a row. Doncic comes into tonight’s game after scoring 41 points against the Washington Wizards, in a game in which he went 0-for-4 from three-point land. He was very aggressive towards the basket though, which resulted in him going to the free-throw line 12 times. With that kind of attitude tonight and a couple of threes made, I think he has it in him to repeat that performance from Tuesday.
Luka has had 35 and 33 points in the 2 meetings with the Suns earlier this season, while shooting over 51% from the field in those games. With Christian Wood out of the lineup his usage rate has gone up significantly. He has 2 career games of 40+ points against the Suns in the regular season and if the Mavs give the ball to Luka tonight he should be able to have his way.

Bridges has been able to hold the fort for the Suns over the past 10 games, averaging 20 points a game, which is quite impressive with all of the injuries they are currently dealing with. With Chris Paul back in the lineup his life gets a bit easier, especially from three-point land. He’s knocking down 40% of his attempts from distance in his last 10 while clearing this line in 4 games in a row. The last time he faced the Mavs he had exactly 2 threes which was the 3rd time in the last 5 games against them he scored at least 2 of them. Dallas just allowed 5 Wizards players to score at least 2 threes against them on Tuesday, so something is definitely off in their defense at the moment.

Christian Wood’s absence leaves quite a big hole on the inside for the Mavs as he’s the team’s 2nd-leading rebounder with 8.4 boards a night, 7 of which are coming on the defensive end. Luka is doing his best to compensate for Wood’s absence, grabbing 10 boards a night in his last 3 games, but that hasn’t produced the desired results in the win column.
Other players will have to step up as well and Finney-Smith has done his part, collecting at least 4 rebounds in 3 of his last 4 games since returning from injury. If we expand that to his last 9 games, he’s done it 7 times, so I’m very optimistic he can continue his solid play in tonight’s matchup. Over their last 3 games, the Suns are giving up 57.3 rebounds per game, which is the 3rd-worst mark in the NBA during that stretch. With the previous meeting between these two teams seeing 241 points scored, we can only hope they play a similar style tonight which should result in more rebounding opportunities for Finney-Smith and the Mavericks.
