Boston Bruins win -2.5 and team total over 3.5 goals (+125) vs Chicago Blackhawks

This is about as lopsided as it gets. The Bruins are on pace to be the best team in the history of the NHL’s regular season. The Blackhawks have been at or near the cellar of the league since opening night. Both teams have held true to their season-long performances entering Tuesday. Boston won 10 straight games out of the all-star break and is 11-2 in its last 13 games. The Bruins have also won 7 of their last 8 games on the road. This will be the Bruins’ softest matchup in months. They have taken care of business all season regardless of the quality of their opponent. There is no reason to think Boston won’t run up the score on Chicago.

The Bruins won 6-1 in the lone matchup between these teams this season. A repeat result a would not be surprising. The Blackhawks enter Tuesday having lost 7 of their last 8 games. Boston scores the 2nd-most goals in the NHL and allows the least. Chicago scores the least goals per game in the NHL and allows the 7th most. Those numbers largely include rosters that have since been improved for the Bruins and worsened for the Blackhawks. The divide between these teams is even wider than their prior matchup, in which the Bruins ran up the score. Sure the Bruins could mail it in and still win, but they haven’t done that all season. That is not in this team’s DNA. Boston will likely run up the score again on Tuesday.

Dallas Stars -1.5 (+175) vs Vancouver Canucks

Both the Stars and Canucks have been playing very good hockey lately. But in a game between 2 teams in strong form, the more reliable team to bet on is the deeper, better team. The Stars have proven to be the deeper, better team this season. Among NHL ranks, Dallas is top 9 in both goals scored and allowed per game as well as in face-offs, power play and penalty kill. The Stars have the advantage over the Canucks in each of those statistical categories. The Stars are T-2nd in the Western Conference thanks to their star power and consistent play all season long. Those are factors that the Canucks just don’t have.

The Canucks just have not found any identity or consistency this season, which led them to making a coaching change midway through the season. Again, Vancouver is playing good hockey. But when it comes to making a play for either side, Dallas is the more reliable play. The Stars have won 6 of their last 8 games entering Monday night. The 2 losses in that span were both by 1 goal and their overall goal differential in those 8 games is +15. The Canucks are 5-2 against the spread (ATS) in their last 7 games at home. But the Stars are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games on the road. Those runs contribute to a 15-18 home record ATS for the Canucks and a 20-12 record ATS on the road for the Stars. Dallas is a good play in this one.

New York Islanders vs Los Angeles Kings Under 5.5 (+100)

The under has been rolling for both of these teams, which is reinforced by Vegas bringing the number down to 5.5. Regardless, the pure matchup makes the +100 for yet another under look appealing. The total has gone under in 6 of the Islanders’ last 8 games and in 4 of the Kings’ last 5 games. This is a matchup in which neither team is exactly prolific in scoring, and one of the teams is very good in goal prevention. The Kings rank 11th in the NHL in scoring but are neutralized by the Islanders’ 6th-ranked goal prevention. On the other side, although Los Angeles is in the bottom half of the league in goal prevention it has been minimizing opponents’ production of late. Recent performances look good for under trends to continue.

The Kings have allowed 2 or fewer goals in 5 straight games and in 8 of their last 10. The Islanders have allowed 2 or fewer goals in 7 of their last 8 games. That is just about par for the course for the the Islanders, as their team identity yet again revolves around smothering teams and keeping the puck out of the net. They can prevent scoring well but don’t score much. The Kings can score — but not usually enough to overwhelm the Islanders’ team strength. The Islanders and Kings have met once this season in a game Los Angeles won 3-2. Recent performances, strengths and trends point to another under.
