COMBINING REAL-TIME STATE COVID RISK WITH STADIUM CAPACITY DATA TO PROVIDE THE IN-STADIUM RISK OF CONTRACTING CORONAVIRUS

Watching football isn’t the same anymore. Some NFL stadiums are limiting their capacity, while other franchises have made the decision to play behind closed doors. One thing is certain though – for stadiums which are allowing spectators, those fans will need to consider the risks involved in attending games.

With the number of coronavirus cases varying significantly between states, the risk levels will be very different depending on where you are in the country. But there are other factors to consider beyond the overall COVID-19 incidence rate within the state.

The in-stadium risk may be different depending on how likely you are to come into contact with other fans at the game. For example, if the stadium capacity is reduced, you’re unlikely to be sat near someone else or come too close to a fellow fan while taking your seat.

The NFL Coronavirus Risk Map provides you with a real-time look at the risks associated with attending a game in your team’s stadium by considering the overall prominence of COVID-19 in the state, as well as the current capacity of the stadium compared to the maximum space available.

Combining these two factors provides us with our five-point risk scale (from very low to very high), which reveals the risk of coming into close contact with someone with coronavirus while at a game*.
