This particular market is not easy to handicap. You never know exactly how the voters are going to make their selections. A team has to be good in order for a coach to earn COY honors, of course, but it also has to be good relative to expectations. For example, the Rams would probably have to go something close to 17-0 for Sean McVay (+4000) to win it. The same goes for Mike Macdonald (+6000) of the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks.
NFL Coach of the Year best bet: Joe Brady, BUF (+1500)
First of all, I’m not overly inclined to bet on favorites in this market. The value just isn’t there – or when it is, it’s the aberration as opposed to the rule. Once you start approaching the +1500 range or so, that is where I will start taking a long, hard look at the options. And right there at +1500, Brady fits the criteria. Sure, the expectations are always high in Buffalo when Josh Allen is under center. With a first-year head coach, though, the situation is a bit different. Brady will likely get bonus points from the voters as a rookie in this profession.
If he can lead Buffalo back to the AFC East title after New England stole it in 2025, Brady will be in the mix for COY honors. And why can’t he? The Bills brought in DJ Moore to give Allen another weapon, and the defense should once again be solid. Let’s be honest, the Patriots will probably be worse than they were in 2025.
NFL Coach of the Year longshot pick: Todd Bowles, TB (+5000)
Do I think the Bucs are anything special? Absolutely not. In fact, the floor is very low. QB Baker Mayfield is already disgruntled after not getting a contract extension and DT Vita Vea is demanding a trade. The season hasn’t even started and it’s already a mess in Tampa Bay. That’s exactly why Bowles will get a ton of credit if he manages to lead his team to the playoffs. In a division - the NFC South - that is expected to once again stink, Bowles may be able to do it. Mayfield is the best quarterback in the division, and Rueben Bain Jr. is the favorite to win Defensive Rookie of the Year award. This team does have some things going for it, and it's not just because the competition level looks lackluster.
