The Miami Dolphins visiting the San Francisco 49ers is quite simply one of the best matchups of Week 13 in this NFL season. There are plenty of interesting storylines surrounding this game, including the fact that Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel is a former protégé of 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan. More importantly, both teams are good. Miami is 8-3 and only a half-game back of Buffalo in the AFC East, while San Francisco is 7-4 and atop the NFC West.

Against the spread pick: Dolphins +4 (-110) over 49ers
It will be fascinating to see which side the familiarity between McDaniel and Shanahan ends up benefiting more. The thinking here is that it will be Miami. The Dolphins have put up at least 30 points 4 consecutive contests and have won 5 in a row overall. Tua Tagovailoa would be in the MVP discussion if not for Patrick Mahomes. San Francisco is being hyped up as the possible best team in the NFC and a Super Bowl contender, but all of that talent hasn’t translated into much domination on the field. Last week in the 49ers’ win over the Saints they looked uninspiring for the most part and they haven’t been able to execute in the red zone all season long. The last time these Niners faced an opponent that is actually playing well they lost by 21 points to the aforementioned Mahomes’ Kansas City squad. When you can get 4 points with a team as good as Miami, it’s an opportunity that should be taken.

Over/Under totals pick: Under 46.5 (-110)
Familiarity between coaching staffs often results in lower-scoring affairs and more conservative offense. McDaniel and Shanahan will probably spend most of the first half of this contest feeling each other out. People might think that the 49ers’ recent resurgence has been driven by their offense since it is talked about so much following the acquisition of Christian McCaffrey. However, the opposite is true. San Francisco’s defense has been paving the way to success. Speaking of McCaffrey, he is banged up (what’s new) and Elijah Mitchell is back on injured reserve with another injury. Fortunately for the Niners, their defense is a lot better than the ones the Dolphins have been facing in recent weeks. Look for this to be somewhat of a defensive battle.
